Ok the fastest I've got with http://www.nzdsl.co.nz/index.php?module=Speedtest is 584kbps.
During the test the average looked more like around the 300, 350kbps mark.

So who out there is getting the 1.6mpbs we're supposed to be able to get?

I have been quite impressed of late. The other night I was downloading 2 concurrent torrents and managed a continuous 170 - 200 kBps (1360 - 1600 kbps) but this mornings speedtest showed 9.8 kBps (79 kbps)

Using tcp/IQ I get (over 24 hrs average) 46 kBps down (368 kbps) and 15.8 kBps up (128 kbps)

Yup, it's all over the place like a mad womans [expletive removed]

but of course this morning - the day I''m going to investigate whether I can get a better phone/internet deal with Telstra - I retest my woosh connection 3 times, and find its anywhere between 450 and 550kbps. This is after I was getting a measly 120kbps last night.

I have noticed that different speed test providers give different results. The nzdsl site you used generally gives a higher result than Woosh's speed test site. Could you post Woosh's download speed test results. Are they the same?

I am getting average values of around 200 kbps in Lower Hutt at present!

The results are getting steadily worse over time, probably as a result of more users being added to the Woosh Wireless network in Lower Hutt. Also marginal connections may be dragging the average connection speeds down as the transmission towers waste resources re-establishing poor connections to the detriment of good (non-marginal) signal connections like our own.

Thats because the nz dsl site shows your speed as whatever the highest was during the test. For example, the test could run at 300kbps but momentarily spike to 320. The final speed shown will then be 320. Not really fair.
The speeds I listed earlier were in fact off the woosh testing site.

Right now, 3 tests in a row shows 425, 540 and 293 kbps. All within a 5 minute space of time.

I also think you can improve results by playing with your IP stack settings.

The speeds you mention are as low as "a measly 120kbps" then between 450 and 550kbps, which you seem to be happy with, and lastly 425, 540 and 293 kbps. In my view these are all well below what you/we should be satisfied with. The download results should be up to 1600kbps.

Okay, even if 1600kbps is wishful thinking shouldn't they at least be half that or higher to be acceptable? I would expect to see 800kbps to 1000kbps on average all the time.

Come on Woosh, can't you improve performance to realistic levels at the poor transmission tower sites?

When I was with Woosh I was getting around 1Mbps and with Vodafone's 3G Broadband I'm getting around 1.3Mbps, so I agree that ~500kbps is a pretty poor effort.

Of course, there are a lot of factors that can affect wireless performance.

You're both right.
And no, I'm not exactly happy with the speeds I'm getting.

The whole story goes like this: I moved back to Wgtn a few weeks ago. Got woosh while staying in an apartment on the terrace for a few weeks, and it worked OK there. By OK,. I mean I was getting aboug 300kbps. Which is really not OK, but dismal. You'd think it would be faster than that on the 7th floor of a high rise in the CBD.
Oh yes, while I was there my woosh phone was all good for the first week, and then the problems started. My calls would die after 10 minutes. Just a hissing noise on the line. Weird.
Anyway, that got sorted, no explanation from Woosh tho.
I then moved into my new flat in Newtown. I hoped my broadband - narrowband, more like - performance would improve, but no. Its still slow.
So. I'm going to take Woosh up on their 30 day money back guarantee - and try TelstraClear.
They reckon they can get me 2mbps up and downstream. Should be good for skype.

Anyone have an opinion on them? (and its got to be better than Telecoms phone + internet plans...! )

Who says Woosh aren't clever? Remember the earlier response below explaining why the nzdsl speed test site gave higher readings than Woosh's original speed test site.

Woosh have today changed their speed test site to show the same meter as used by the nzdsl site! This means it will show the highest momentary spike not the average speed as before.

This will give higher readings than their earlier speed test meter. How cunning - the Results will all be higher without changing/improving the speed they are actually transmitting.

You've got to be kidding. I'm sure this wasn't an overnight decision by them - it would take a while to implement a change like that - but it makes you wonder: are they reading this thread?

To continue my story of my woosh experience. I rang up to cancel my account and claim the 30 day money back guarantee. they offered to trouble shoot with me, but I declined. The staff I talked to did observe that yes, my signal strength according to their logs was less than ideal. I then got put through to the "retention team". After about 25 minutes of being on hold, I was starting to wonder if perhaps I'd been put through to unattended dead end phone in the basement - but no, eventually my patience was rewarded.
They're going to send out a courier bag for me to return the equipment in.
its a pity. I really wanted to like them. I think its a nifty idea - a wireless 'net and voip connection - but the thing that killed it for me was the speed - or lack of it
