I can't recall, what is the "break" line noise threshold for Chorus to install VDSL? 12db?

10.8dB - as read from the Wireline auto-prequal service.

So, even if Wireline says 10.9, the it will be automatically rejected .. even if your router says lower.

We've had cases where it's been just inside 10.8dB threshold, but when the tech was onsite he measured above the threshold.
Usually they let it slide, but we've had one [insert insult] tech who unraveled his work, and said it wasn't suitable and left! :(

Anyone know if they are going to relax that sometime soon? I would accept slower speeds (Modem Reports 13.4). I did hear they set very high standards for the first few months and might relax it... 13db is about 1km correct?

I wouldn't imagine there would be much difference in upload speeds between ISPs, they typically have plenty of that capacity free.

Tawa Wellington, 21M down and 7M up, line sync rate is 22M down and 11 up, on Hosting Direct and pretty happy with them so far. Work connection.

10.8db is a relaxed level, it was originally lower than this. I don't see this ever being changed.

Ummm, just to check the comment by networkn, he said the "break line noise threshold" but both CUni and Steve refered to line attenuation, which is what they comment should be about.

I have been considering upgrading to VDSL. When Hosting Direct had their special offer on last January I did make further enquires. However I was not convinced it was an ideal solution. Part of the issues I have with changing to a VDSL service is that I am moving away from telecom, who have provided me with a pretty good service for many years now.

I read with interest everyone?s experience with the various VDSL services.

I basically have a pretty good ADSL 2+ service with speedtest.net reporting 13mb/s download.
However I would like a much higher upload speed, than what is currently is supplied on my telecom connection.

I figure I?m about 900 meters from the cabinet, and I have read that this may be a bit too far?.

Is there a way I can find out how much wire there is from the cabinet to my home?

I have put my modem stats below ? Is my Line Attenuation too high?

Can anyone guess from the information I have provided if VDSL would give me a better upload and/or download speed?
TIA

My modem stats are:
DSL Type: G.992.5 annex A

Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 945 / 16.228

Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [kB/kB]: 0,00 / 0,00

Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12,0 / 19,0

Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 9,5 / 17,5

SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 15,5 / 12,5

Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / BDCM

Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 0 / 0

Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 0 / 0

Loss of Power (Local/Remote): 0 / 0

Loss of Link (Remote): 0

Error Seconds (Local/Remote): 0 / 0

FEC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 160.650

CRC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 38

HEC Errors (Up/Down): 14 / 36

Heya Allan,

17dB does exceed the threshold - however, it's the reading inside the Wireline system that counts, not the modem - so there's still hope.

VDSL has a 1KM service limit - as measured by the loop, opposed to direct path to the cabinet/exchange.
You may find your loop goes down the other end of the street before turning around again and entering the DSLAM.

The only way is to prequal your site.
If you PM me you address, or phone number, I'll be able to tell you if your line can handle VDSL :)

Apologies - I assumed (possibly incorrectly) that networkn was referring to attenuation, as opposed to SnR etc - it is common for people to make that cross reference.

I'm sure there is a noise level that becomes unacceptable, but I'm not sure what that value is.
There's definitely no information given on a site noise levels during a prequal - it's only attenuation and DSLAM capabilities that essentially give the Yes/No result.

I can check noise levels on a provisioned line as part of the Faults system, but again, there's no documented cut off.

Hi, I think Networkn just used the wrong term, but I wanted to clarify with him

Cheers

I wouldn't be scared of changing ISPs as long as the ISP you move to has a good reputation. I would suggest you ask an ISP to do a pre-qual check on your line where a tech will go and confirm teh true attenuation.

Based upon those stats and information you're not ging to get VDSL2.

Typically 10.8db equates to around 700m. Your modem attenuation figures are also going to be inaccurate unless you have a master filter fitted (ie they'll be affected by your internal wiring). The only definitive way to know whether you're going to be covered is if you get an ISP to do a pre qual for you.

Thank-you guys for your feedback. @CUnl did a pre qual for me and as others have guessed I am border line.

I had a Master filter fitted when I first connected to ADSL, but that was many years ago, so it may be an old model (if there is such a thing).

As @sbiddle hinted at (and other forum chats), I think my first priority is to look at the internal wiring, before I move forward on with VDSL.

On thing that came out from this exercise is that my address/phone didn't give an automatic response due to a multipoint terminator, which gives a fluctuating attenuation.  What is a multipoint terminator and why would I have such a thing?

I actually have two physical wires coming into my house (I use to have two lines).  I have speculated that telecom is using the second wire for ADSL only.  But that is only speculation.

How long have you been with them?
Are you using it for any VOIP purposes?
