Just noticed this post on a Samknows blog:
Spotlight: The Super Agent That Sam Built | Blog (samknows.com)
My understanding is that Samknows routers in NZ are distributed as part of a relationship with the NZ Commerce Commission (ComCom). Presumably all such whiteboxes aggregate data for reporting to ComCom in addition to the individual users dashboard with ISPs only getting information via ComCom reports.
They talk about embedding Samknows Agent software in an ISPs router as an alternative to using a whitebox. It is easy to understand that the agent software may have access to additional data that no external whitebox could ever hope to see. Presumably that data is aggregated to the ISP and the payback for them is that they get network performance information that is invaluable but exceedingly proprietary. The ISP would need to allow Samknows to report agent data to the ComCom and this could well result in self-incrimination unless the ISP gets to launder it first.
The other notion that occurred to me is that it is the router manufacturer, not the ISP, that should be involved, as they are responsible for the router's OS.
Any chance of a NZ implementation of this (embedded) agent?
