I've read a lot of this thread and have been curious if I can improve my VDSL sync speeds or not, but haven't been sure as I'm not a user of a Fritzbox. We started out our VDSL connection with a Fritz, but it was extremely poor for us and ended up often getting the DSLAM in a boot loop, requiring a physical card reset.

I ended up giving up on it and picking up an ASUS DSL-N66U, which is generally good but gets worse sync speeds than the Fritz did (but actually doesn't break the DSLAM). On the Fritz we could get 33 down and 10 up but on the ASUS we get 25 down and 10 up.

Is our line quite bad? I'm wondering if it's due to the apartment building we're in - I thought we would get faster speeds (I can SEE the Courtney place exchange from our balcony). Any feedback on this spectrum graph?

i love the look of the UI there.

looking at your line, its a little noisy, so SNR is running a little high. but your main issue looks to be your distance.

17db attenuation isnt pretty for vdsl, and pretty obvious in your spectrum too... looks like possibly a case of the cables not running direct as you would wish they are...

while we mainly run fritz's in here, any modem is welcome :)

Yeah, it's not a bad box - lots of bells and whistles, just like the Fritz... but in black ;)

I thought the SNR might be a problem but surprised we're too far (based on Tory st) - perhaps attributed to the fact that we're on the top floor of the apartment building here and those cables don't go where we think, as you say. It's a pity because we live so close to town.

I guess we hold out for fibre, then? Building is supposedly wired for Cat 5e and due in June ;)

suspect it will be a case of the building wiring looking at the maps

does look like an odd layout though, so ill double check with someone tonight.. seems you connect to a cabinet which is right next to the exchange itself. services quite a large area, so crosstalk in bundles is plausable too dragging it down some more.

might be something you can query with your ISP about and see if theres not another plausible reason other than cable distance that could be looked at.

as you say, fiber is coming soon, so might just wanna stick with what you have..

Is there any issue with 84.05.51 firmware?

I got 2 DLM resyncs so far and it's just sticking on 8b. Line is capable of far better but never changes anymore. I used to be on 17a...

if you changed from 17a to 8b, you have a 90 day cooldown period.

.51 has been seen to have higher error rates, and higher attenuation figures, on shorter lines, which yours seems to be.

not that i know of, also not 100% on if the 90 days is cleared on a DLM reset, but the last few lines that are 17a and have been reset recently seem to indicate it causes the 90 day wait to prop up.

was meaning to check with Brent on that actually, now that i think about it too.

Just thought I'd mention for those of us connecting to Broadcom cabinets on a 7390 who found we couldn't get any DSL sync at all with the 6.03 firmware (I know I wasn't the only one, there were a few in the "DON'T UPGRADE TO 6.03" thread a while back), that the 6.04 beta firmware seems to be safe for us. 6.03 prevents me from syncing at all but I've been trying 6.04 beta from the official ftp since last night and it's working good.

6.04 works? thats interesting.

word of caution, 6.03 pushes a new bootloader, which blocks downgrading without forcefully doing it.

Hello boys and girls, it's been a while! :D

I've had nothing to contribute recently, but after 2 months of reduced sync speeds (down 6mbit to 44mbit) after my last little experiment (not resetting the router after oddly high error rates), I decided today to get DLM reset on my line. I rang snap and asked them to do it and they were more than happy to for me. They said it would take 15min and that I would need to reset my router, but humorously it happened while I was still on the line with them and it cut off the call - LOL.

So I'm starting again at square 1:

I will be interesting to see if there are any differences to when my line was first setup; I'll keep you posted on my progress.

im thinking about tweaking my line down some more, try to crack that perfect 70!
