you could always try raising a fault. if you make heavy use of upload that'd be annoying :)

I will if it doesnt signifigantly improve with 998. His was blamed on multiples, as if they suddenly appear on a line one day causing speeds to halve. My bigpipe line has always been worse, even back when it was on slingshot unlimited adsl. The snapdegrees line performs much better for speeds. Might have to see if I can get them swapped around since I game and browse on the snapdegrees one but do all the torrenting on bigpipe.

The potential reduction in upload worries me too. 20/4 at the moment on DLM1. As more data rolls in it's looking more and more to me like this change is going to be a bad thing for people who value upload and have marginal-poor lines.

i went from 9.6mbit upload to around 6.4mbit upload, the upload reduction hype train is real.

heavy voodoo. no-one really knows for sure. some say a low attenuation, but it seems to be more complicated than that. the old rule of thumb seemed to suggest if you had great (50 megabit+) then you had a good chance. but there were people with 50 megabit syncs still on 8b before. now a rule of thumb may be if you get 70 megabit on 8b there's a good chance.

There are actually more clear guidelines than that. as per the following post.

If your line is on the 17a spectrum profile, but the spectrum between 8Mhz and 17Mhz is not being used, I'd be looking at your CPE. it shouldn't report 17a unless the DSLAM is providing that, and we run 8b and 17a on independant profiles.

As for the question of 'what allows a line to be on 17a':

The current bandplan is 8b (goes without saying!)
The line is shorter than 350 meters, which is an electrical length in the 5530 Network Analyser of <7dB
DLM is in operation on that line
A Bandplan switch hasn't occured in the last 90 days (to stop bouncing between 8b+17a, while still allowing re-evaluation as/when required)

Due to the differences in 998 compared to 997 i question if this will change however... Hopefully @Chorusnz or @BMarquis will give more details there though.. Its is within my list of questions i posted in the Gfast thread hopefully some finer details will come out :)

There's what Chorus what might say... and what end users can see.. so I'm trying to go only with what users can identify. Lots of lines are under 350 metres from cabinets and not on 17a. (of course it's a little tricky knowing the path)

I struggle to understand what benefit there is to knowing what the 5530 says about your electrical line length... VDSL as a service input from Chorus to the RSPs doesn't come with any particular guarantees that short lines will be on Profile X or Y.

If you get 17a, great. If you don't.. well, tough. The systems are doing what they are intended to do. Personally I'm happy Chorus have always stuck to their guns on keeping VDSL as tied down as it is (no manual interleaving or profile assignment etc) - It genuinely reduces the impact on RSPs and saves a lot of people that think they know better from asking for changes that won't help/could hurt their connections.

As mentioned multiple times in this thread, 998 is will in more cases than not, increase download speeds. Unfortunately this has the risk in reduction of upload speeds. So, yes, for you it should make it better.
