Are the Db ratings ok. i dont understand them really

Something is very wrong there. The noise margin usually sits around 12dB, not the 20.4 you're seeing. And your upstream speed is about double what you should be getting with 12.0dB line attenuation.

I'd recommend rebooting the modem/router and seeing if the numbers change. I'd expect to see numbers more like:
Downstream: 35000 - 40000 Kbps
Upstream: 10000 - 10360 Kbps
Noise Margin: 12dB / 12dB

If the numbers stay wrong, could you please post back with which modem/router you're using. Also make sure that you're on a VDSL connection, not 80/20 UFB (fibre).

with SKY FIBEROPTIC PRO with is about 80 mbits. sky router sr102 built in modem.

speedtest average 76mbs . attenuation was 13db then adsl2+ cable from router toi home bt connection fitted so gave 12dB.

from what i understand the lower attenuation dB is the better and the higher noise margin DB is the better.

So you're obviously not in New Zealand then, hence why your stats are probably a bit different, your plan will be different to what we get in nz plus your obviously on fibre not vdsl

The term "fibre" as used in the UK is IMO a bit misleading. Some areas get actual FTTH like in NZ with UFB, where as others get FTTC with VDSL into the property. It's entirely possible that neroztatek is in fact connected through VDSL, and from what he has posted I would say that is indeed the case.

Lower attenuation is generally better because lower attenuation allows more bandwidth on the line.
You can think of noise margin as spare capacity that protects you from noise spikes. Generally you want this to be at least 5-6 dB, lower than that and you might see reconnects or degraded performance due to high error rates. Higher than that and you're giving up bandwidth you could use.
When you're hitting an artificial limit like you are, it changes a little: attenuation is irrelevant (you're already at max speed) and noise margin just represents capacity you can't use - so long as it's not very low you'll be fine.

I moved house a few months ago and dropped from 17a profile to 8b. I'm now about 500m from the exchange so I suppose it was reasonable to expected as much.

Wondering what the real world value would be in trying to squeeze a bit more out my connection with the DownstreamMarginOffset tweak (and whether anything else seems unexpected here)?

clearly borderline unfortunately... you could tweak maybe a little, but anything more than maybe 30mbit would be pushing it.

Yeah not pretty.

I live on the edge of Wellington in a fairly dense residential area but I'm on a tiny little annex street which hasn't seen civil service in a while.

The overhead lines look OKish but the line between the service pole and the edge of my flat is straight out of the 1950s... (from the edge of the house inwards everything is new).

Is there any avenue to get my line quality looked at or will I get a 'within operational bounds' response?

Coming back to my line, its been 21 days now and im sill on DLM-2, im not getting many if any errors on my line but it still hasnt changed. Should i ask telecom to reset my profile?

DLM 2? Nah I would probably hold out as last time it took a month to reset from DLM 2 to 1 for me.

In the power cut from last night's storm I finally got the chance to see what our VDSL spectrum might look like if there was noone else connected to the cabinet. :)
