hio77: Ah, thats a little before VDSL hit 998 still. but not bad at all! Personally i would have liked to see your upper frequencys slightly stronger. Considering your linecard, i would be tempted despite my love for the firtz, to get a hold of a broadcom based modem and see how it preforms. Im looking to try to push vdsl onto my rural borderline connection here, being on VDSL is an reasonable reason for shortening the 250~300M of cable in the driveway but on adsl its a netgain in downstream of maybe a mbit or so - far cheaper to manage with snr tweaking so a null point.

And not much scope for shortening the line from street for us. It's already a straight line.
I'm going to give it a couple of weeks to let DLM do it's thing, and then probably switch to a Draytek. My Fritzbox has an annoying issue of losing most of it's config when it reboots or power cycles. It's odd - the flash isn't damaged as I could update the firmware, and some config appears to remain, but it always goes back to the first-time-setup wizard after a reboot and will have factory default WAN settings. Also, I cannot for the life of me get the damn thing to allow me internet-side access to my internal machines. UPnP on, statics rules, no matter what, it still doesn't work. I've never had this much trouble with another modem.
The Asus (DSL-N55U) on the other hand has much better Wifi, 4 gig ports, and no problems with port forwarding. Unfortunately it is not a VDSL version so I can't use it without forgoing the speed improvements I just got. There are some versions of this device that have a dedicated WAN ethernet port. I'm pretty sure mine isn't one of them but I believe that those ones can simply use a normal ethernet port for access to an external modem via bridging.
So either I get the Vigor 130 (if I can do pass-through on the Asus) or one of the more expensive ones (for Wifi).
Ultimately my aspirational goal is to convince Chorus that since there's already a fibre trench under the road -- the main cable north is under SH1 right there, following the road -- they should give us UFB to the kerb, with an outdoor ONT feeding an outdoor 802.11n or better access point on the power pole right next to the driveway with a point-to-point link back to my house (it's only 50m) for the final leg. It'll never happen, but a man can dream.
Contrast this with the way the Australian government has f^Hhandled NBN. I was back in Penrith visiting my family over Christmas. If my parents lived in the equivalent setting here, they would have at least 50Mb+ VDSL, if not UFB on the future schedule. Over there, they get about 4Mb DSL which slows to sub-Mb speeds during peak usage periods. It's appalling.
