Haha! Yup, that's pretty much as 'borderline' as you can get!

I would be VERY interested to see the speed difference between your Fritz and a Draytek! I'm considering upgrading myself, but it's hard to find real world test comparisons between these 2 routers. Please let us know if you end up making the switch!

Well it seems to have settled down now... it's very unpredictable though. I guess you get that at 70mbits on a line as long as mine :)

Now... I wonder how much faster I can get it or whether 70mbits is a hard limit? :D

your on a ikanos linecard, sadly 70/30 is your maximum.

being on 8b realistically 70/15 is the best you could ever get (i haven't calculated upstream bits exactly there.)

Certainly an impressive feet at your distance! moreso on the fact that your upstream is solid tbh given that its with 998.

we have seen 8b lines on broadcoms break over 70 on 8b, Astonishing to say the least.

A sad day approaches; My departure from the VDSL ranks. My fibre scoping visit from chorus will be this friday, then in theory connection by next Thursday. I'm somewhat glad my VDSL only does 44/8 because at least fibre will definitely feel like a good upgrade. ;-)

Ok, I need some assistance here.

My Fritz is on the fritz and has been resetting itself at least once a day for the last week or so. It's done this in the past but was fine after my move to 998 until last week and now it's caused me to drop down from DLM-1!. In any case, I think it's time for a new router.

I've read that routers with Broadcom chipsets often do better on NZ connections, however, based on what my router says about my cabinet, I'm not entirely sure that it's running Broadcom gear:

@hio77, you mentioned that this is an Ikanos line card, I'm assuming that this would say 'Broadcom' instead if they were using Broadcom gear??

Also, what can you guys recommend in terms of replacement routers. I'd really like something that I can tweak the SNRM on, but I'd be happy without this feature if I can max out my line at 70mbits, which seems pretty likely if I can get something that will give me slightly better performance than the Fritz. I don't need anything with a built in wireless access point.

I'm also very interested in anyone's experiences comparing the performance of a Fritz to any other brand, especially Draytek, as this would be my preference in terms of brand.

Get something Broadcom based and stick it in bridge mode with a proper router behind it IMO. NF4V, NF8AC, HG630b, HG659. All fit the bill. Other non Broadcom modems I've tried which support bridge mode have had terrible queueing.

AFIK the only modems that offer functional SNR tweaking for VDSL are Fritzboxes. The commands exist on Broadcom ones, but they don't do anything.

Absolutely, your on an ikanos card, as i identified before and confirmed by your screenshot :)

Matching linecard with modem chipset is always nice.

quick example, i see a 2mbit jump by using my 7390 (Lantiq chipset) over the draytek 2710ne (nfineon PSB 50600 - Horrible device, i wouldnt suggest it ever, but for arguments sake its on hand.) and With Broadcom chipsets seeing another 2mbit ontop of that (BCM63281 being my favorite for best speeds.)

Matched against a Broadcom DSLAM.

on an Ikanos DSLAM i would pick and mix a little more, however the chipset for VDSL that i have been most impressed by in terms of raw gain in speed is the HG659 containing a BCM63168. - Although in theory this chipset should snr tweak with ease, and does in Other devices. could be possible that the firmware is nerfed and does not have access to the right flags.

The asus people go mad on is a popular choice for tweaking too.

the vigor130 does not snr tweak, Often does sync a bit slower but is known for holding its sync well too. - it uses a Lantiq, Similar to some of the fritz's

Anyone got an opinion on the quality and reliability of the Netcomm VDSL gear? I don't care about the wireless or firewall features etc, this is going to be a pure modem (as @Lorenceo mentioned, these low end devices are best used in front of a decent router / firewall).

Lorenceo still runs one in bridge mode if im not mistaken.

Hes very picky about the queuing rightfully so should be able to give you a good idea.

The NF10W looks like it might be what I'm after as well:

I've had an NF4V in bridge mode for about 18 months. Hasn't skipped a beat yet, and gets good sync rates on my poor line. I can't comment with any certainty on what it's like as a router, nor what its wireless is like. I've tested it briefly as a router, and found IPv6 to work as expected. Beyond this though I can't say.

i have the NF8AC and prior to the little issue they had here it was up for about 90 days with no issues

Hmm, I just realised that I might be able to get a free Fritz from 2Degrees as I technically qualify as a 'New' customer from Snap...

What model are they supplying these days? 7490? What are they like sync speed wise & for SNRM tweaking? Isn't there some limitations with the newer models?
