Interesting my ping to the same server at work was 35 to auckland with fibre.  The VDSL is the same but when I was on an adsl1 profile but fibre to the cabinet (22km out of town in the sticks) my ping was 24.  Does the transistion to adsl2/vdsl or fibre increase ping as it gains more latency at the cabinet? Or is Timaru got some funky exchange stuff going on? 

 

 

 

 

sounds like something funky. in both cases it sounds like you werent on a lowest latency profile, the fibre latency seem slightly higher than ild expect honestly. Suspect your being terminated at a more central point there. Then again, im assuming by fibre you mean ufb.

Hi There,

 

I have just changed my 2degrees plan and received and setup my new FritzBox 7490 modem on a VHDL2 plan.

 

Unfortunately I am only getting 17.7Mbits down and 0.4 up!

 

I am in a rural location and 1.3Kms from the Cabinet. The upload speed at 0.4Mbits is even worse that the ADSL2 1Mbit ....

 

I will try the settings in this thread, but am not hopeful of getting better results. My spectrum sucks ... see attached image .. where is the green upload spectrum?

 

What can I do? Chorus refuses to help out ....

Therein lays your problem that and 25/35db attenuation.. the only way your going to get it any better will be move closer to the Cabinet or wait for UFB

Yes, I know that is an issue ... but how much of that attenuation can I fix by improving my house wiring?

 

I do know the specs on VHDL2 is far better than what I am getting for 1.3kms from the cabinet.

 

(I should be getting 25Mbit down, 2.5Mbit up ...)17 Down I am happy with, it is the upload speed I want to improve ..

 

 

 

... and Fibre is not on Chorus's plan for our area   ..... for ever ....

snapdegress nolonger do full installations by default.

 

The interesting thing about your line, is i cant see any upstream specturm at all. I suspect a fault in the fritz UI there. 

 

 

 

Realistically with US0 enabled, you should be atleast around about the upstream of adsl.

 

 

 

As you are at the worst end of it all, ild highly recommend doing what you can to improve your line.

Bitswap will turn on and off, it functions as a way to midigate errors in noise on the line by swapping out bad bits for good bits. You wont really gain or loose anything by it being on or off.

 

 

 

Heres an older fritz screenshot, US0 is the small slice at the very start, that ADSL uses for its upstream.

 

 

*I numbered DS1 and DS2 wrong, should have been DS0 and DS1

I don't expect to get much better on the down link, but I still expect I should have better up link rates.

 

Hopefully this weekend I will have a chance to get rid of any phone jack extensions/stubs ... maybe it will improve my up rate.

If you've only got the one jack on the line and have naked VDSL you probably should take the filter off. It's only going to make things worse. I've been filter-less for a couple of years now. I also replaced the copper from the ETP to the modem with cat6, not sure if this made any difference but again it can't hurt (unless you mess it up of course).

Yeah, I wondered about replacing the cable from ETP to modem, but how do you fit CAT6 cable to the phone jack style connector in the back of the modem? .. or do you mean just to the wall socket?

That is interesting findings, sound reasoning for why it works but never really considered that some of the lower would get trimmed.

 

Realistically US0 should provide around about what you get on adsl (slight more given the lower snr, but if im not mistaken power level is lower than on adsl so it equates out lower.)

From the ETP to a wall socket, though the Fritz has an RJ45 on the input so wall socket to modem is also cat6. In my case it's actually ETP->cat6->19" patch panel->patch cable->19" patch panel->cat6->RJ45 cat6 wall socket->cat6->modem. I'm very close to the cabinet though (100m), for a more marginal connection it might be worth trying to avoid so many connectors.
