Guys, I don't know if this is an appropriate thread to post this, but right out of the blue, my VDSL connection has just gone crazy. A while after switching to VDSL I was getting 40 down 12 up, but for a a while now, that has dropped to 36/8. Now I am suddenly seeing 65Mb/s down. What's more I am fairly rural, and effectively 1.2k from the cabinet. I din't think this was even possible with VDSL.

There is a school just up the road to me, and they ran fiber to the school six years ago according this picture I took at the time. We are the other side of the road, but they are not allowing anyone to connect with fiber to the home.

Looks kinda like to me that vectoring has gone live for you.

drop in upload would line up with the forced switch to 17a on a longer line.

Did some digging based on your screenshot..

@TLD Tuesday 4th, 1.27am went live.

50.4/10.8 jumped to 66/10.5 and since then you have climbed to 70/10.5 raw sync; looks real clean i would not be surprised to see it increase by another 5mbit or so based on current number :)

DELT puts your copper more around 700M being rural i'd bet it's high gauge copper. Less loss over distance.

My line acts and calculates out to be just a bit over 1KM, despite it being twice that. it is one of the joys of rural connections

We are about 500M line of sight to the cabinet, but the line goes down the other side of our close, and back up the other. We are #1 (Ashford Grove, Rapaura RD3, Blenheim) so we have to add twice the length of the road. It only has 12 houses, and the people across the road don't seem to have much of an advantage comparing our numbers. It's a shame about the upload speed dropping, as that was where the problem was. I just checked the Chorus site, and there are no plans to let us connect to fiber any time soon.

When we moved here in September 2005, we couldn't even get onto broadband — they told us no connections available. I can't even imagine what dial up was like. Probably a mental block to stop me going completely mad. When we did get broadband, it was 1.5Mb/s on a very good day. By heck that was painful.

Based on what i could see, the last 6 Weeks you have been at partially the same upload, so it may have dropped quite some time ago?

DELT is what the dslam sees the distance as :)

I'm hopeful eventually chorus say no more zero touch, you must have a vectoring modem.

From there, they can vector upstream and the gains would be much the same.

There is one interesting thing from the vectoring changes, part of it being upstream crosstalk is still protected somewhat and the second part being the drop from 50 to 30mbit maximum upload reduced crosstalk from close lines.

It took about 2 months, but quite a few lines around here have ended up 4x upload speed from it. sadly for your line, distance is starting to do it's part a bit in US2 which is where you would gain upstream for 17a.

Hi Guys,

I'm currently with Vodafone and using their HG659 Hub, but my contract is expiring. Would it be worth moving to 2Degree for a Fritz Modem? Would it make a difference?

I recently had a drop in seed which was resolved by contacting Vodafone and getting a chorus tech to reset my line in the cabinet. The technician said that my the current line measures 75Mbps at the cabinet but others are getting 120 Mbps. How do I request for my line in the cabinet be moved to a faster one?

I know I am pretty far from the cabinet but I have some neighbors that get 40Mbps so I would at least like to match theirs.

My stats from the modem:

Looks like simply a longer line honestly..

even being slightly closer would be a large increment at that distance.

Your running 6dB snr, 14.5dbmV so that's all spot on. PSD could be slightly tappered but unlikely.

I'd try your modem at the ETP, see how it preforms there.

Generally fritzboxes will be slightly slower due to chipsets.

@dryburn you can't request your line to be moved to a faster one

The line is what runs between your house and cabinet can you see Chorus running a new copper cable between your house and the cabinet? No

not really. If they tech feels it's required, it is up to him to do it though.

I recon look at your house phone wiring first. Disconnect extra phone jacks. Put your modem on the jack closest to the point where the phone line enters your house.

I'm on naked broadband and earlier this year my Internal Phone line was rewired to a shared demarcation point on the property. So it might be the actual demarcation point to the cabinet that's the problem.

Hi,

I'm looking to do whatever I can to max out my VDSL speed. I have just moved from a house with UFB so coming from gigabit fibre to VDSL has been a little sad.

I am with 2degrees, have a fritzbox 7490, and have just had my electrician install a new cat5 cable straight to the ETP on the house. He also did a master filter.

This boosted my downstream sync rate from 29 to 39 mbps (this is an hour after doing it, so I understand it's possible it may improve due to DLM?)

The next thing I'd like to try is replacing the Fritzbox with (probably) a draytek vigor 130 which seems to be the most commonly recommended.

After that I'm out of ideas - I have heard about vectoring, but my ISP doesn't seem to know anything about it. Any other ideas? I know I can't really complain about 39mbps compared to what some others have, but losing gigabit figbre (2 houses over on another street have it, but we are in the "never planned to get fibre zone". Vodafone HFC lists our address as having service, but then it turned out it was never actually built :(
