littleheaven: So does your profile re-set after the upgrade?

yes it does.

Pornolio:

My download sessions don't seem to be going faster than in the past though, so I am not sure if VF has done some throttling / rate limiting implemented to prevent the spike in network traffic on their network as more of their customer base are moved over to the new profile.

It seems pretty common that providers are rate limiting traffic to DSL ports.  Probably partially to do with protecting their network when users get DDOS'ed, and probably partially because there are very short queue lengths on DSL ports, and sending too fast to them leads to dropped packets very easily.

The "right" solution is to set a bandwidth policy at the speed of the sync and preferably to implement AQM there, but even having a bandwidth rate limit with some extra queueing will boot international speeds. (it won't make much difference to local tests, as the resends are so quick)

With international destinations it could also be normal congestion etc.  Getting 50+ megabit on small international files means there needs to be a near perfect connection, which would require not flooding the DSL port too fast.  This is one of the reasons that good transparent proxies can actually boost performance even for uncached data.

If you want to easily max out connection you can use something like steam which will use multiple parallel connections to Australia maximising performance, but also habitually inducing congestion - if you download one file from the US, then start a steam download watch the US connection get starved out.. (you can set bandwidth limits in steam, but there doesn't seem to be any setting for how aggressive to be)

Anyway, I suspect with things like Truenet going around they'll get it fixed up pretty quickly.

Talkiet: We still have to make a small change to support the higher rates on our side of things. Those changes are very likely to be rolled out progressively over the next week or so.

Cheers - N

@Talkiet in relation to that comment, the 998 upgrades have been in progress for about a month now, why is it taking so long?

Well... There are thousands of isams and the change is being carefully managed. But you'd have to ask chorus really... It's their platform.

tbh it seems kind of quick to me.  remember there's a higher chance of problems etc when doing migrations like this, and if they get swamped with a lot of users having issues or such they need to have the resources to deal with such.

remember ufb isn't being finished until 2019! (and it's likely to take past then for some users to get connected)  compared to ufb availability this is ultra-rapid.

your comment says WE which i took to mean spark. and the rest of your comment still makes it seem like spark needs to do something to enable user to get speed tests matching their sync speeds

i understand chorus' side of things but your comment sure does make it sound like spark has to do things too

Some isp's need to make a change at their end as well on their BRAS's.  If the isp hasn't got there end ready it just means that speeds would stay the same once chorus changes the vdsl port config. The newer 998 speeds would kick in when the isp makes the relevant changes and the customer would need to reboot their router.

Also one must remember that this is only users with already fast speeds not getting faster speeds... you can still get up to 70/10 while on 998 if the isp hasn't done anything.  And lots of users are moving from 20 to 40 megabit etc which will be pretty transparent.

my point was if the above is the case and the ISP needs to change things why has it not be done already?

most isp's will have change management procedures etc, and other work going on at the same time.  also there's limited time before most people will stop doing changes for christmas holidays.  and so i wouldn't be surprised if at least one isp doesn't fix it up until next year.

it's not like the service has ever been sold as anything faster than 70/10 anyway, and i think some people are only selling it as up to 50/10.

We do, but your comment, "the 998 upgrades have been in progress for about a month now, why is it taking so long?", to me at least, sounded like you were explicitly referring to the 998 upgrades (which are a Chorus only change)...

As pointed out since, the changes required to be made by some/all RSPs should only impact users that have their downstream increased above 70, or upstream significantly increased above 10.

I honestly don't know how long the upgrades on our side will take. We aren't going to dump all the changes into the network in one go. We'll stage it across different BNGs over at least a few days, and possibly a couple of weeks. There's expected to be near zero impact to the great majority of customers from the change anyway so we're certainly not making it a top priority to get it done fast. It's just a little bit of network tuning to account for the higher than 70Mbps downstreams that some customers will get, and the increased upstream that (hopefully) many will get.

Cheers - N

im just curious as to why your (sparks) upgrades are taking so long, 998 has been rolled out for about about a month now, and has been in the testing phase since July, and been on the cards for over a year.

would have thought it would have been something that was done prior to 998 being rolled out for everyone

There are other small tweaks being rolled into the upgrade. It doesn't make sense to go and touch these boxes for every small change so we often batch a few small things together... Less regression testing, fewer outages, fewer hands on the boxes (or element managers).

The 998 Band plan change wasn't really driven by a desire for more performance, it was a correction to get us in step with the rest of the world and it just so happens that some people get a speed upgrade... As such I personally don't see (and I THINK this is the official line) any great need to prioritise the profile changes on our BNGs to match the timetable of the Chorus changes.

Cheers - N

Resync in a power cut so no crosstalk and still 5.6 up and 8.9 up on the 2 connections. UFB can't come fast enough.

I am now at 68/11.3 is that the best I am likely to get? How do I tell if I have been moved to Band 988? I hope it will be better since I was at 65/10 before.
