I think it's like being able to buy a US phone number, or get an overseas domain name, or host a .nz site overseas. It's not illegal. And people have their reasons sometimes better than others for doing such.

vpns are illegal in iran... not everywhere has the freedom of speech that nz does. but legal here. they're even legal in china.

but then saudi arabia forbids women from driving.. different countries have different levels of freedom..

We are clearly talking about NZ here, no need for this to branch out.

One issue with things like VPNs is that it can be seen differently. It can be seen that the law of the country your connecting to's laws apply.

Look at Megaupload. They're being charged with breaking US laws while in NZ. Sure they have servers in the US - but how much difference is there between a router and a server? They argue that they don't control what data is on the server, which should be at about the same level as controlling what goes through a router.

I'm not saying using VPNs are illegal, my reply was of a more generic nature to the post talking about how ISPs shouldn't care about what you do with your connection.

there is a difference between not caring, and actively promoting. Telecom, Orcon, Slingshot etc all allow you to use services like Unblock-US and so on which do the same thing. They don't care. However they do not promote these kind of services or offer it themselves for some reason, despite there being an obvious demand for this kind of service. Could it be because their lawyers have told them it is a legal grey area?

Let's put it another way. If there wasn't any legal grey area, then Fyx could (and would) be very open about which overseas services you can use their service to access - they would state that the service can be used to access Netflix, Hulu, iPlayer etc etc
Since they go out of their way to avoid stating specific uses, then they must think there is a potential issue.

Great idea and kind of cheap. Although I'd be $40+ a month out of pocket if I switched.

Like the global mode idea, 34 cents a GB is pretty good.

Nooo! I'm a Netflix subscriber and watch Hulu etc by VPN and have just signed up to a 12 month Orcon Genius contract so I could get 200GB a month for $99.

My key question though - would it be faster than using a VPN? Watching BBC iPlayer can be excruciating at times.

Most of that is irrelevant considering they are most likely routing only specific requests through a Proxy they likely host themselves or have hosted on their behalf in the required country.

It is unlikely to be a full proxy and more likely just a specific path for the selected traffic as set by them, Allowing them to do the same for any country in which they want to make content available.

yeah that will be interesting. Although there is no contract with Fyx, to switch ISPs just to get a VPN-like service seems fairly drastic when you can already do that for <$10/month, and if it turns out to be suckage you can easily switch to a different VPN which would not be so easy if you are with Fyx

This is exactly what I am thinking. I am currently on the slingshot unlimited plan and loving having unlimited data (although the amount I use it would cost the same to be on fyx). I think I might be a fence sitter for a while and see how others find it. Maybe even pester some of the users to visit a specific website to see if they can get access.
