djrm: For many years the rural community havent  been subsided by anyone as the options were limited to satellite or locally created wireless. It is true that with the RBI the tax payers will be subsidising the rural community but then you urbanites get better access to public transport, sewerage works etc. I think in the end it probably equals out.
Anyhow I dont count Parau as being particularly urban when only 25 kms from Auckland CBD.

Rural users have been subsidised since 1991 when Telecom was privatised and the Kiwi Share created. Since then all telco's have had to pay this subsidy by way of the KSO / TSO levies. Vodafone for example have contributed around $20 million per year in the mid to late 00's for example, solely to fund unprofitable rural customers - a fee that ultimately I'm paying because I'm a Vodafone customer.

Which would have been all well and good if Telecom had actually spent the money received from the KSO/TSO levies on improving services to rural customers.  But of course they didn't; rather it bolstered Telecom's bottom line with only an infinitesimal amount being spent on upgrading rural lines.

Now that the RBI is in full swing, we have Chorus in our neighbourhood installing a fibre-fed cabinet to service an area which has never before enjoyed broadband at any decent speed.  It's payback time for rural customers who have for so long been charged exorbitant installation fees for their phone connections without any broadband being available.  You urban dwellers can just suck it up for a change :P

I'm another that is happy to knw a bit of my Vodafone bill helps rural folks get at least some telecommunication services witnout paying the full moon for them.

As a resident of Huia, I'm gutted to lean that the RBI tower is going on South Head rather than on our northern side of the harbour, but see the logistical reason. I did harbour high hopes that if the tower was installed here we would utimately also have got ADSL2+ cabinet replacing the good ol' Conklin.

Guess I am lucky we have the Ethernet link out to a Conklin out here at all, given some along the road closer to Auckland can't even tap into that.

If you don't change direction you will end up where you are headed

I would just like to thank everyone for their useful replies. Chorus finished laying the fibre to cabinet last week and I now have the BB that I have always wanted. I had no idea that my work via VPN was as fast as being at work!
