The issue is more Chorus sticking to their 10.8dB maximum attenuation. This is not possible at that distance.

There are people out there who have connections that exceed this limit as installs have happened for a variety of reasons. Most of whom have connections they may feel are OK, but the impact they can have on the network in terms of crosstalk are catastrophic to other xDSL users and for this reason they should never have been provisioned.

VDSL gets around this with UPBO, but it can't fully eliminate the issues of FEXT and NEXT. Users with poor signal quality basically end up impacting users close to the ISAM.

andynz: Hey that's more than fine for me.  I currently get 12Mbs ADSL on the shonky old 1.6km line so anything more than that is fine.  Even if it is the same on the new 1.3km line  I don't mind.  I just want the improved upload speed that VDSL offers.

Anything else is a bonus.

The speed that you get is not the only factor at play here. In order for the connection to  work at that distance would require high power levels being transmitted. The higher power levels would mean increased crosstalk and interference for the (say) 49 other users on the same feeder from the exchange, which would negatively impact on their connections.

Chorus have set those limits in order to ensure that everyone gets a reasonable connection. While the technology certainly works out to greater distances than what Chorus will ordinarily install, the impact on the other connections becomes very significant in such cases.

I can appreciate what you have said about impacting others.

What I don't understand is how attenuation figures are being quoted on a line that's not even connected and has never been tested.

Isn't it basic stuff to base service on the actual line that will be used.

I don't know the specifics of your line, but making an educated guess, I expect that Chorus know the type of cable installed, and the approximate line length, and from there can calculate an approximate attenuation based on results from tests when the cabinets were installed. If this approximation is near the limit, they may do a site visit to physically test, but if the approximation is significantly higher than the 10.8dB cut off, then it's probably not worth it.

Anecdotally, 700 (ish) metres line length seems to be about the limit (of course, there are exceptions), so on the face of it, you are at nearly double the maximum distance, even on your shorter line.

My frustration has grown out of a 3 week process which has been yes you can / no you can't. Last week I was asked to pay $100 to do a real test which I agreed to pay but now were not doing that test.

So far there seems little science in this process.

Get ADSL provisioned on the new line, then try a churn to VDSL and see how you go.

Chorus don't need to test a line. They already have a pretty good idea of what the attenuation will be as I explained on the first page of this thread.

At the end of the day it doesn't matter of you're 1.3km or 1.7km, you're still too far away.

Just thought I would update with our situation. After attempting VDSL Chorus won't install for us so decided to go with a standard ADSL connection.

That was nearly 2 weeks ago. I'm sitting here on a Friday afternoon with no ADSL. Chorus tech came on Wednesday. Poor connection speed as there are many faulty pairs in Whenuapai so none left to use. Chorus refuse to replace the nearly unusable multicores round this area. Ironic as we are just down the road from Southern Cross termination point and were on little more than damp string.

So Chorus tech said he would have to pass over to cable repair department.

Then an hour later he had repaired one of the pairs and we were getting 13mbs down speed. Acceptable speed round here. But we couldn't login and use it as Chorus had not signed the job off. Login not enabled till the job is done apparently.

So tech tells me the job is done. Then ISP tells me I now have a new RFS date of 23rd. Huhh. The tech just told me it was a finished job.

Yesterday, Thursday no login and now lost base DSL connection.

Today, being the 23rd no sign of Chorus. But FFM tell me the job has been signed off as finished by Chorus. So FFM put an urgent complaint in that the service is a failed install.

Nothing from Chorus.

Oh well, must be time for a glass of wine.

A thought for the week - The only way you can get away with the abysmal service and lack of competence of Chorus is to be a monopoly.

Chorus you really are hopeless.

Is there anybody here from Chorus who cares? Anybody I can talk too?

Complaints have been laid, but no response nothing form Chorus.

No interest in providing a service what so ever.

ChorusVan. Ypou PM'd me on the 12th of August: "
DM me your contact phone number & I will call you to discuss.
"

I wrote back with my phone number but I never heard from you.

WTF

Thats Full Flavour Media. They seem to be having a lot of trouble with Chorus taking any action at all. The job seems to be a total mess on Chorus's part and Chorus have no interest in fixing the problem. Why would they, what alternative do I have??

Well were finally there with ADSL link and good attainable rate of 17mbs.

Many thanks to Brendan at Full Flavour Media and thank you to just one little part of Chorus that is functional and that is the techs on the ground.  If only we could deal direct with the tech's all the time we could of had this sorted weeks ago.
