johnr: Instead of using caps use BBcode and use bold
AvidRAcer:johnr: AvidRAcer this is the issue people gave you helpful INFO and you only came back at them with Caps lock on, Telecom / RSP should not have to take into account what your PC NIC card / WiFi is capable of
Wow your impossible aye, you have not once given me any helpfull info...the other people on here have. Actualy they should have taken it into account ONLY BECAUSE I SPECIFICllY ASKED THEM IF MY SPEEDS WOULD BE EFFECTED and was told only the OS mattered...telecom listend to that call and now I have been given a credit and am only beiong charged for fibre 30 untill i get new lapp beinging of jan. They are aso changing thier sales policy with regards to fibre 100 so clearly they agreed with me that an elite service like fibre 100 needs more info for public..
Caps is not being angry like you seem to think, i use caps like a highlighter to put emphasis on something important..
You stil havent answered the question after your very snied comment about me having studied at weltec.

l43a2:AvidRAcer:l43a2: your connection can hit the expected speed your device cant, end of story.
Yeap i understand that. Just wanted the opinion of others here since speaking with this guy who supossidly owned a PC store
no point arguing about this, you know whats what now, telecom didnt tell you the full story according to you, now you're upset yes, move on.

People here are only trying to be helpful, the problem here is it's not what you're wanting to hear. On most networks with a high speed connection like 100mbit each computer is not going to get 100mbit each, it's a shared pool where each computer takes what it needs. Combined, you can get your 100mbit.
Your computer only needs 40mbit because of it's CPU, but every other device on the network can share with the remaining 60mbit if they want.
This is how networks work, you're never going to need 40mbit on a single PC so there's no point complaining that you're getting huge speeds but a single device won't accept it, it's like feeding more food to a full baby, makes a mess.
Step back a bit, I feel all your questions have been answered and there's no point from here on going on a troll war trying to get someone to give you the incorrect right answer. Nobody is in the wrong, if you want 100mbit then get it but you're never going to see 100mbit on a single device, or need it.

SaltyNZ: The answer is that to fully saturate a 100Mbps link you'll need a very high end machine. More than you'd likely be willing to pay, and far more than it's really worth to get a little more speed. Which likely won't be hit in the real world anyway since the interesting stuff is all overseas, and will be slower than the speed test server in Auckland.

Heya, yea fare comment, the thing is, I can get my hands on excellent second hand machines for a fraction of the cost of most normal people, so what i can get for 500 bux could very well be what most people get for 2k. So thats why I realy want to know what the specs are that i should be looking out for, between trademe and other sorces i should be able to find something withen my budget.
Ive been offered a 2011 Macbook pro i7 something something thunderstorm or thunder bolt processor 2.3GHz, something like that, 4gb ram, 750gb HDD, 17" screen.
Would this do the trick, i know its not the Intel core thing that someone was talking about but according to the owner an i7 is bloody good...But in saying that, he is trying to sell it so I suppose he would say it was good even if it was not.
rhy7s: Can someone explain why the CPU would be such a bottleneck? We've had 100Mbps ethernet since the mid-90s and turn of the millennium CPUs can get 100Mbps wirespeed running firewalls. I'd be interested to see iperf results or speedtests from a live CD of some kind.
