JoshWright: I think that NZ has done very well in rolling out fibre to cities and towns, but there is room for improvement for those who will likely never get fibre. I'm still on ADSL1 not far from Hamilton, and no-one from Chorus seems to know if that'll ever change. I'm just super jealous of those who have a UFB connection going down their street.

You are certainly not alone being on a conklin. But the issue is with remote broadband really they should be charged at a higher rate due to the cost to service them. That way the upgrading of those remote locations could be funded by the extra revenue brought in from those customers. That would be the more fair approach however it's not the case and the more densely populated areas fund the less populated areas.

There are a lot of people in that situation, but ultimately the issue comes back to $$. We have a regulator wanting to force prices down, and another big telco who thinks the price should be under $9 across every copper pair in the country because that's what they can deliver a DSL port for in the Auckland CBD. It doesn't require a genius to realise the ROI on a potential $250k cabinet and 20+km fibre run to serve 50 customers isn't great.

For many rural NZers their broadband solution going forward will also be RBI wireless, not copper.

Ultra Fast Fibre is the LFC (local fibre company) for Hamilton, have you checked on their website?

Yup Chorus has nothing to do with UFB in Hamilton. I reckon Ultrafast should have gotten more areas since Chorus now says they can't afford to do it all.

Time to find a new industry!

Is there any cheaper installation method for cabinets? perhaps using microwave backhaul rather than needing to lay fibre? 250k for a cabinet seems a bit excessive IMO.

that 250K is for a rural network cabinet (Derived POTs & xDSL - Fibre feed) not a UFB cabinet - the Microwaved backhaul ones cost even more

What is it? 50k for cabinet, 50k for labour and 150k for resource consents/BS?
