Don't get me wrong, it's coming alright. The Sky isn't falling, but it's in for a very well understood correction at some point.

I run a few networks around the place and I'm seeing this more and more.
Users are not downloading (i.e. saving to disk) much these days, torrents are representing SFA of the total traffic, the majority of the traffic down is streamed from the likes of youtube, netflix, hulu etc. The problem i see with this is that the average usage per user of international bandwidth is now 1.8+ Mbit. now I'm considering that my household uses a fair bit of netflix and hulu we stream it at approx 4 - 6Mbit, now if we have 1K users streaming at any one time and thats not that many users and all streaming at one particular time thats 4 - 6Gig of international transit.
From where I sit its just not feasible to be running links that hot for the amount of users, the financials just dont add up unless your doing something dodgy or on the cheep.
so back to my question....
what are the GZ users now doing, are you streaming from the US or are "linux torrents" the way for the majority ?
Davey, might be time for Vibe Communications to get into Colo/Hosting to create a two sided business model.
If you pull that off then you can afford to sell transit cheaper to your customers to mitigate some of the financial pressures they must be facing.
Yeah could be time, we will see, but what would be nice if we had a Equinix or a Core Site to come and build one and run it like they should. Equinix SY3 has to be the most impressive facility as far as DC's go I've ever seen and core sites staff and facilities are by far the best. for example when i rock up there off the plane with bugger all tools you just ask for a tool kit (see https://www.dropbox.com/s/2jk90ujpggx2fc5/AYS_welcome_SV1_20140429.pdf ) if you want a SMF fibre cable in Equinix thats $60
Interesting seeing the feedback on peoples habits, in my personal usage its netflix or hulu only, sky went 18+ months ago and thats a 4Mbit stream. The only problem is when i want to watch the news its a pain as i dont have an arial hooked upto the TV, its just the roku.
All the bigger guys are caching in some sort of way, bluecoat or peer app but i dont see how its going to be able to scale with caching IPTV from netflix or hulu, yes there will be some level of caching for the popular shows, but its just not going to be feasible in the long run as there is just so much content.
My view on the unlimited was that the bigger guys were relying on being able to cache torrents and web traffic, but thats changing now to more live streaming, can you imagine if 500,000 people are streaming TV(unicast) at the same time, thats going to be 2TBps and NZ networks I doubt have the scale.
anyway life goes it, 10/100G interfaces are just going to have to get cheaper and JJ at FX is going to have to get out of bed more to install more 100G cards on his backbone.

maybe Vibe are seeing that sort of traffic where most other ISPs aren't because you have implemented "global mode", and they haven't. Access to netflix is great for customers, right up until the time you realise it's costing you huge $$$$$ in international bandwidth when everybody is streaming 4-6Mbps at peak times.
