I would imagine that the cost to run the fibre down into the village is at least half a million - so why falter at the last step ?

As I pointed out, the high density of Okura means that 'last step' is no worse than any other suburb.

You'll just have to move into town like the rest of us who want (or have) fibre.

I am not asking for an infinite pot of Government money - TANSTAAFL. Perhaps I'm looking for more transparency in decisions on the availability of what is a 'Public Good' and not simply a competitive, commercial offering. Why not show the economic realities on a map - to allow the country to understand them and perhaps to allow communities to 'top up' a shortfall - if that is seen as worthwhile ?

What makes Okura so special?

I suggest a little exercise for you. Go around your village and see how many people are prepared to sign a contract committing themselves to say $5,000 as a contribution towards the cost.

My bet is it will be a wake up call about how much Joe Average really wants UFB.

My office is in the centre of town in a small North Island city. We have UFB already pre-wired into the building. (MDU setup).

Of my neighbors:
- 1 has no internet connection
- 2 have ADSL
- 1 has fibre - ie: myself.

A good suggestion.
Remember that with the upgrade there would be several good cheap options - eg faster ADSL, VDSL - in addition to fibre.
You have told us that there are 150 households in the village.
A 3% uptake of UFB (the NZ average in areas with free installation) would mean that 5 houses get fibre.
A 10% uptake would mean 15 houses.
Try for 50%.

Disclaimer: I have no vested interest in Chorus or in any ISP. I live in Wellington, but probably won't have a UFB option until 2019.

UFB uptake has now hit 7.7% according to the NBR.With a doubling of uptake rate on a year ago, it does seem like momentum is starting to build.

Well - I appreciate all the follow up on my fibre awareness ;-)

I own a section in Okura village and I'm working through the consenting process (oh joy!) to build a modest house there. Over the past year, I have taken an interest in village issues and events - and made a number of new friends there. As a guy who derives his income from software dev & support, the internet has been pretty close to my heart, ever since I clambered aboard in early '95 with my OS2 box. Remember those days ?

So I am well aware of Okura's current & historic internet woes and I'm extremely interested in the 2015-16 improvement. By then I'll be living there.

As described in another Geekzone thread, I have just survived the installation process of fibre at my temporary (another North Auckland) address - one in which it should have been a piece of cake to hook up fibre. All manholes & ducts laid when the building was built six years ago and UFB was already connected to 3 of the 6 joined units. I would guess that it cost Chorus and Vodafone 20 K (over this past month) to make it work to mine. With the many work crews and visits, the remediation and snafus - it was more like living through a Python sketch. As the parrot.

So, yes I appreciate the words about cost/benefit - and how low uptake renders UFB (or any new service) non-viable. I don't think I ever pushed for 'special treatment' for Okura - I'm sure I said that a couple of times...

What I did wonder was why we do things like this in such a veil of secrecy ?

Over the last decade, I looked at a lot of sections in North Auckland. With one of the criteria being good future prospects for internet service. Just a joke of life that I wound up with a section in Okura which had everything going for it _except_ great internet service. That's life.

Periodically, over that decade, I inquired of Telecom and the ISPs for maps of service quality - or even just maps of cabinets. No joy - ever - from anyone. Before you jump in and say 'sensitive info / competitive advantage' - let me point out that it's a monopoly and has been that whole time.

I'm very grateful for sbiddle raising my hopes for VDSL in Okura in 2015/6 - but again, it's from information that's not 'in the public domain'.

But why ? Why can't we have visibility ?

Is it just a legacy mindset from our great Post Office tradition ?

While the locations of cabinets and exchanges are not publically accessible, mapping data and tables showing upgrade areas isn't. This is all publically accessible on the Chorus website.

I took this up with the Mapping team (why the online map doesn't say VDSL available from xxx like the Industry Maps) and received this reply...
