I've queried what the cost is actually for and waiting to hear back, seems a lot of money to punt on hopefully having a good connection

Since chorus dont have any techs/installers on there payroll, it all gets contracted out to visionstream who then hire contractors to do the actual work. $1000 will go to chorus for their admin fees then $1000 will go to visionstream for their admin fees and the installer would be lucky to see $600 for his work.

You guys are vastly underestimating the costs involved. Suffice to say, if it were all that profitable and fantastic, we wouldn't have just had a round of redundancies nation wide through one of the three primary contractors in November. The quoted prices assuming two cable joints, network design, etc. are pretty darn fair.

Anything I say is the ramblings of an ill informed, opinionated so-and-so, and not representative of any of my past, present or future employers, and is also probably best disregarded.

WTF are they charging him for if its a fair price for me with nothing, it must be a rip for him with everything already there??

Plus the exact same prices? Maybe they have an 'auto charge' amount that covers their costs no matter what!

They most likely are trying to force a fiber connection instead of copper.

Without knowing the full story it's not possible for anybody on here to comment on that. Safe to say if Chorus want to charge $2.5k then it's not going to be an intact copper connection back to their network with capacity to connect the customer.

Here's my update from 2D provisioning today:

"I have emailed Chorus for a detailed break down of the costs.

In regards to fibre, I have checked your address and unfortunately, fibre is unplanned and it doesn't appear to have RBI available (which can cost approx $10,000 or more).

I will be in touch once I have a response back from them.

No fiber in the area and wont be as not part of the ufb areas, if there were slinging cable to the property I probably would have just paid it, I still might depending what I hear back I'm just not sure what I'm being asked to pay for yet

Gimme $1000 and I'll install a modem at the cabinet and ran a few 100M network cables with repeaters to your house.

Can I legally do this?

1) Essentially I could easily just put a small waterpoof box next to the littlke grey pillar (its right in bushes anyway) and do use a Wifi router with higher spec aerials (I have several 5dbi aerials) and be laughing with a great signal (bridged if I HAVE to) on my side?

Alternately, (2) if I get my own sparky to 'sling the wire', or 'punch through underneath' to the Pillar, would this be legal, and would I then just have to pay the usual $99 connection fee?

In either case, would Chorus be likely to connect their pillar, even if they limit support to that point?

I'd suggest getting in touch with Downer (I believe they do your area?) and see if you can liase with a designer, team leader or field manager. The status quo is unless it's a BDD (pit and pipe) system, the feed should be on the boundary, but you may be able to organize thrusting a service lead under/hanging an aerial lead over the road to the C/T opposite if there is capacity at the terminal. A lot of variables including I think council permission for works in public property? But I'd suspect they want to tap into a cable passing your property rather than the existing network.
All hypothetical though, Downer/Chorus can probably tell you more.

Unfortunately, Chorus have advised they do not provide detailed break downs due to the commercially agreed rates with their service companies, their coded rates are paid on 'an outcome' that may include one or a dozen tasks, with materials, labour aggregated into that price.

They have confirmed, while their network does exist, the quoted price is to install a new distribution point/ terminal to enable access this existing network.
