I think the lack of discussion really shows how unimportant this announcement is for 99% of people. :p

Which is pretty cool in its own way. All those years of slowly increasing dial-up and then xDSL speeds to finally reach a point where what is available at a reasonable price (in UFB areas) is better than what most people need or want is very satisfying and a great job by the NZ Telco industry and government.

Hopefully means if they can take a breather from constantly having to upgrade everything for a while they can focus on making those speeds available to as many people as possible.

Hear Hear. Really pretty awesome. I downloaded ~25GB of Windows updates today like it was nothing. I'm 100Mbps down. I lot of people seem to take UFB for granted but I think it's a pretty big deal. This will be our network for the next ??, how many years? Would anyone like to guess? 50? 100?

EG If we get UFB2 here in Alex/Clyde/Cromwell then we should be going straight to Gigatown speeds...!!!!

If so then the new 700 bed seasonal workers accommodation to be/being built in Cromwell makes that more viable and attractive etc and here in Alexandra/Clyde its a boost for tourism and adds to the advantage we have here over Auckland with cheaper housing and the much dryer climate here...slower pace of life etc. Oh yes and no traffic problems like Auckland has..not to mention the international science projects in the area.....

Come on be happy you lot....be enthused!!

If it was at Dunedin pricing (equal to - or cheaper than - the current 200/20 plans), I'd be about 20 times as enthusiastic.

For an extra $30+/mth more than 200/20, it's not anywhere near as exciting. Especially given the lack of sources where I can actually take advantage of more than ~130Mb/s of that.

I think Chorus said that the Dunedin pricing would remain for three years. From memory it's only been about 18 months so far.

I think Chorus said that the Dunedin pricing would remain for three years. From memory it's only been about 18 months so far.

I think it's been extended for longer than that, there were complaints that not everyone was going to have their fibre deployed in time to actually take advantage of it.

I've found the Chorus press release; it was 25 Feb 2015. My 18 month guess was pretty close :)

So it's been extended until Feb 2019, we'll get 4 years all up.

what financial difficulties? that they only made 90million profit this year? lol

I was under the impression that Chorus' bid for the UFB build had included the profit from their copper network at the price it was before the CC most recently cut it down. With reduced profit from the copper network, the economics of the UFB build were becoming more difficult, so chorus' service speed/response time has been worsening, and already Downer has quit the UFB subcontracting business.

Just off the top of my head from several recent news articles, I may well be wrong.

It's interesting to note that the only ISPs I've seen mention gigabit plans are small ones: Full Flavour, BigPipe, and Myrepublic.
