I don't really understand hfc. It struck me as a good cheap technology but my personal experience has been endless observations of fail in three networks.

Its a way of distributing RF broadcast signals that has had the ability to move IP data kludged onto it at some point in the past, which is not really suitable for building a city wide high speed network.

coffeebaron: I thought you'd be super keen for the extra redundancy? You could have Fibre, Cable, xDSL and a few mobile data connections for extra measure:)

I don't know where the xdsl terminates.

Can't run bgp on the hfc.

I learnt this week that the fibre does fail so fair comment.

....but those networks are so expensive.

I can run 30mbit to the location for less than $300. At that price nothing competes for value.

Ya there's lots of issues.

I think gpon star networks are bonkers too but thwy seem the current flavour.

Vhs was stupid too and lets not start on Windows but majority often rules and even i have to confess gpon is getting the job done

Ok inactive Chorus copper service lines aren't removed unless Chorus are doing a clean up project ( as like most service requests they have to go through an RSP/ISP and unless there is one then you cant generate a request to move remove something)

Now I didnt say this but if it happens to be 'Falling' off the side of the house and is hanging down you could always ring 08004NETWORK and report it to the Chorus Network Helpdesk (normally used for reporting damaged or dangerous network elements) they may send a faultman around to clean it up.

BTW if the Copper network is aerial from a pole there is a 90% chance if its Chorus UFB then it will also come in aerial - Enable is a different story

Chch so it is enabled and the network boundary is on the fence line so aerial would make no sense.

Thanks for the rest of the info.... the "work around" kinda defeats the purpose of the question.

If i was going to down it myself then id coil it properly too because it will become an instant hazard.... i suspect that's where its heading.

I did consider just demanding that the guy delivering the rubbish skip just place it on my front lawn... the cables wouldn't contest a skip truck for long..... not sure users of the hfc network would be to happy... but as orhers have already suggested, do i care?

I've been chatting with people about this issue off line.

We complain about crime in this country yet I've been consistently told to just break the law on this one.

As a child i learnt about civil disobedience. As a purely academic question ive been pondering the question of just pulling these cables down as instructed and then serendering myself to the police for my actions.

I would have thought that if a provider has redundant equipment on your property, and say you are wanting to repaint or reclad your house, you an get them in to remove it. Not sure on the laws around this, but if it is going to cause an inconvenience to you, then you should see what they can do. I can see the old cable network being a problem with this type of thing in the future, as people move to UFB fibre, as there are cables still attached to powerlines all over the place in Wellington, and it will cost a lot to remove them, and their upkeep overtime being exposed on poles won't be insignificant.
