No, fibre is much more reliable. Half the time (mostly on Stuff comments) people complaining about fibre being "unreliable" are using a crappy wifi setup, which is actually causing all the problems, not the fibre itself.

Middle of an urban suburb, invercargill and currently 1 bar

@halper86 1 bar is mobile coverage and should be OK to use and I went to Invercargill many years ago and had great mobile coverage

So @halper86, so your fibre is not that reliable?, in what way, yes sounds like you had bad luck with two ONT's and a modem dying, sure you dont have power issues in your house?

As others have said, fibre is very reliable, its a new network and being fibre is simply way more reliable as optic connections very rarely go wrong, there are very few connections in a fibre tail as all joints are fusion spliced and the only mechanical connections are at your ONT and on the splitter and at the OLT, its just not normal to have erratic connections, sounds like the issues are within your network.

The grey thing is called a plinth. Once all the fibre for your area is laid in the ground you'll be able to place your order - that needs to be completed first.

When you say "my area", do you mean the cabinet area?

I'm in FFP10. I have a walk around and it seems all houses in the FFP10 done (except maybe the top right-ish corner).

In terms of how the fibre is rolled out, is there currently fibre in the ducts along the road, or is it blown all the way when I make an order?

It's laid in the street, when you place an order it's (usually) brought through from the street into your house. And your area is usually your cabinet area - but I was thinking more of the township you live in when I said the area. In any case, it's probably not too far away.

What is FFP10? cabinets are normally labeled with 3 letters then a / then 2 letters. My one is ONG (Cant be bothered going to check) for onehunga exchange then AB i think it is for the cabinet.

chorus will generally do a few areas at a time and when they are all done they will do the work in the exchange and then the background paperwork. once its all completed you will be able to order fiber. could take a few months so the may date may still stand.

Whitianga has been an exception to the norm with UFB dates actually having been pushed back significantly. In part of town the build has been complete for months but UFB still won't be ready until May at the earliest in parts of town. Somebody did mention something to me about delays to to Chorus deploying a new fibre ring clockwise around the Coromandel for UFB but I'm not entirely sure if this if the sole reason.

These little boxes have gone up on the power poles along my street (Bryce Street), seems all ground fed connections (like mine) have been left at the ground level.

Address checker still says May though, and 2degrees says August which seems to be the same date Chorus says for "Business".
