Where does it say they offer 950Mbit? I think you'll find they offer up-to 950Mbit.

Come on Michael, a router that doesn't get much more than 500mbps is not an acceptable router ot be handing out to customers on a 950mbps capible connection.
i would be expecting it to hit 850-950mbps on a good day.
yes it says up to, but 500mbps is miles from it.

Not exactly the same model but I have an ASUS DSL-AC68U router running with Orcon Giga fibre plan.
Speed tests were also limited to about 500Mb download until I completely disabled QoS on the router,
then I could get get 900+ Mb which seemed acceptable.
At it happens, I turned QoS back on later because it seemed good to limit one single device to 500Mb,
just so you can run multiple devices at speed without one fast device scoffing the lot.
If your ASUS has a QoS option you might want to try switching it off for the speed test.

The speed limit with QoS on will be global - the CPU(s) will be maxed out handling all the traffic as the firmware will be unable to offload the routing to the routing hardware with QoS enabled. So you will not be able to have multiple connections adding up to more than the global limit of 500 Mbit/s, and the maximum will likely reduce a little bit with more connections to handle.
Hi guys, I'm back. Reviewed the discussion since I left and it appears my speed problems
ring a bell with other users. Particularly, why do they offer 950 if they cannot deliver?
Now, a new solution has arisen which Stuff Fibre users will be aware of:
Stuff is killing off Stuff Pix as of 25 October which means that they are varying the contract
vis:
We do understand this is a change to your Stuff Fibre plan. If you wish to make any changes or terminate your contract, our friendly, local customer support team are here to help. They can be reached on 0800 862 337 or support@stuff-fibre.co.nz Monday-Friday 8am - 8pm and Saturday-Sunday 9am - 5pm. Please notify us by 25 October 2019, and if you are on a fixed plan we will waive any exit fees.
which means I can bail with no financial loss. But if I do so, are there other comparable deals going? Is it better the devil you know?
Had a look in Glimp, not much use.
Anyone in South Christchurch getting good speeds at similar ($84.50 unlimited 950/500) outlay?
Recommendations please.
I would look at 2degrees great support here on Geekzone as well
Dial111: Orcon via the gz deal on glimp, half price gigabit for 6 months @$49.5 then $99 thereafter, works out to be $74.25 average a month.
And support here on gz too
Have to agree support from Orcon is also good on Geekzone and SparkNZ and Jason Paris CEO of VodafoneNZ is also great

Buy a decent dual-band WAP*, install it centrally in your home.
Then turn off the supplied router's Wi-Fi
* maybe one of these Ubiquiti products
Back again, thanks to all for those recommendations. I was with Vodafone with cable modem for six years.
The modem had to be re-started regularly to maintain performance. A replacement modem and power supply
partly cured the problem.
Will have another look next week, may give Vodafone a call first.
Thanks again to all.
