Is this the info you were after? (I should point out that my router is currently running some questionable German firmware that seems to transpose "." and ","):

Yep thats the page, so your attenuation is 17.5dB indicating just over 1km and S/N of 13.5 is good. However with those stats you should be syncing at around 20Mb/s not 10Mb/s, also lots of CRC errors, but maybe thats related to the local sync loss, purhaps its from you playing with phone/filter connections.

Have you done an isolation test, this means disconnecting all phones/faxs/skySTBs etc and only having the modem on the line, then see what this page reports again. Ideally this should be done at the first phone jack in the house, and with all other wiring onward from there disconnected.

this is strange we live all the way out at the bottom of halswell near the farms - ADSL2 is online! and our friend in fendalton/memorial ave - no plans for adsl2 upgrade in the near future! hmm ...

According to Telecom address checker I supposedly am connected to ADSL2+.
My NetGear DG834GT modem router is also ADSL2 compatible with current firmware.

Real world performance appears fairly abysmal however.

stats from DMT utility:

Downstream bitrate 3788 kbit/s
attenuation 30 dB
SNRM 11.9 dB
tx Power 18.7 dBm

Upstreeam bitrate 945 kbit/s
attenuation 13.9 dB
SNRM 14.9 dB
tx pwr 12.4 dBm

Would any of tha above indicate that I am NOT getting ADSL2+?

Upload speed seems about as good as I might expect from ADSL 2+, but download speed seems unchanged from ADSL 1

How can I tweek my modem/router to improve performance? - i have the DMT utility for my modem, but am unable to find English language help file or anything else to explaini what the various parameters mean or what I should be doing....
There is a slider & various toggles under DMT "special menu" which I assume teak things, but am not sure what they do.

Any help most appreciated!

To partially answer my own question, by trial & error I have managed to increase downstream speed to 5322 kbit/s using DMT utility by dropping noise margin slider to 10%, and toggling on "SRA" and "Trellis" parameters whatever they are.

Still seems pathetic for what is described as an "up to 24mb/s" connection.

What else can I try?

lol what a fail 2009 for me and even then you probably only get 10GB and i bet you do not get those jelly beans we saw on tv. :(
