Any chance of re-routing the cable?

Not at this stage. When my son is old enough for me to have the office back if that port connects to 1gb then yeah I'll just cough up the dough and rerout the cable from the ONT to the modem router

hes failed to deliver

Isn't it most likely that the break is right at the end where the cables are terminated? Is there enough slack in the cables to just cut them shorter and re-terminate?

Using the fancy tester the breaks in pair 8 I think it was (both sets) is 11 feet and 14 feet in the 2 cables :(

My thoughts....

- Cable has had pretty bad treatment for one pair to break - possible building mod somewhere damaged cable?

- Bad batch of cable - seems strange that the same pair is bad in two cables?

- Possible hidden cable join?

- Possible bad cable join tucked away in the back of another flush box?

- Some dodgy use of one pair way back before 4 pairs were required in a network?

@Gordy7 you are probably right regarding the batch of cable as it was the same pair on both runs.

I have other outlets nearby that run at full 1Gb speeds and runs of wire that are cat5e running to phone jacks so I'll splice those and see if I can get it up and running... I've found a punch down tool but what are these called? I've tried searching all the codes printed on the side online but cant seem to find them (or is this them here - https://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=2710383515 )

Edit: Also, I will need to run a cable on the outside of my house (between the cladding and the internal framing) should I use STP for that run - approx 5m - or just normal CAT5e will do?

Hi if the cable run on the outside is not going to get wet, then standard cat5e or cat6 utp is fine.

Its called an rj45 keystone that trademe one is fine.

Is that photo of one of yours, as the idc headers are mounted.

Looks like I can only get that gel stuff in massive runs, I only need 10m...

Yeah its a spare one laying around I had, it wont be used.

Looks like Cryil will be sorting me a cable - thank you very much. I've orded the punch down tool and watched some youtube videos on how to do the Keystone bit, I think I can manage that.

My question is can I use the punch down tool that I've ordered on the Hubble "wire board" in my above photo ? (top of page 2, with all the individual wires) I will be connecting a new cable to one of the spare slots.

Thanks for everyone's help on the connector side of things, I had a spare phone line that was cat5e next to the dud outlet, I've re terminated it at both ends using Keystones and tadaa....

I just need that cable from Cyril7 now and I will be surfing the web at light speed 😁
