has anyone heard of the Kaon router that Sky are using , is it better than the Fritzbox 7490 that i am using now.

http://www.kaonbroadband.com/product/retrieve.do?productId=91&category=Router/Repeater&lang=en

I have one and its relatively decent in terms of speeds.3 bedroom house on a single level. But this is obviously an anecdote.

  • wifi speeds on iphone 12 pro max is 600-700 mbps down // 450 up
  • Wired 920 down // 450 up
  • This is on another vocus (sshot) provider, which is why the modem just worked when I hooked it up. My connection is due to go online next with Sky.
  • I have the booster with it too and speeds on the other side of the house closer to the booster or far away from router is around 200-250 mbps on my iphone 12 pro max.
  • Gaming has been fine for warzone.
  • I had a look at the admin settings on the router and it seems basic enough (no gnarly skins or too much customisation yet). One thing that was missing for me was a DMZ mode.

Not entirely true..... they have their own ASN and IP address ranges and their own agreement with Chorus.... (they are "Sky Television Network" tails not "Vocus Tails" I am sure however they are using a significant amount of the Vocus Core and their expertise

I could have sworn that I filled out a page to get contacted when it was available. As I haven't been contacted, perhaps I didn't?

Yes of course, I just meant that my slingshot connection started working on the new modem.

OK just tried to contact the Sky help desk to see if i need a user name and password to connect or not , i was told yes and then it got confusing . i asked them what it was and he didnt seem to know what i was talking about  and when i explained that i was with voyager and i needed a user name and password to connect my router to the internet he said Sky needed one and it didnt matter what i used and my Voyager set up would work. Now could anyone who is with Sky and use their own router be able to confirm if any of this is true ?

Sounds confusing yes, but the info is correct. I'll pass the feedback onto the team!

We're using PPPoE which requires a un/pw, but using port based auth - so any values in the username/password field should authenticate. I tested with un/pw set to a/a and it worked. We've also got dual auth so IPoE will work too as long as you're set to VLAN 10

Noticed the TV ad for Sky Broadband tonight, looks well done. Has the same guy in it who keeps getting told to use Xero.

Edit: Just seen the ad again, it needs more Cow Bell (watch till the end)

@kelots can you say or not if Sky would be looking at doing Mobile as a MVNO down the line?

Also if any mods see this, given the mainstream advertising I've been seeing would it be worth giving Sky BB its own Sub-Forum?

May as well go here..

"Sky is offering a year's free Disney+ access to anyone who signs up for at least 12 months to its new broadband service. Following a recent price rise, the Disney+ streaming service costs $12.99 per month or $129.99 (a 15 per cent saving) if you pay for a year up-front. Sky Broadband offers an unlimited data 900Mbit/s UFB fibre plan for a very competitive (for that speed) $79 per month.

The Disney+ offer will be available to any eligible customer who signs up to Sky Broadband before May 31, 2022, and is a new or returning Disney+ subscriber.

All customers that have previously signed up to Sky Broadband will also be offered 12 months of free Disney+. That should get Sky some goodwill. 2degrees snubbed existing customers when it introduced a similar 12-month promotion involving Amazon's $8.99 per month Prime Video. The Disney+ deal is also exclusive to Sky Broadband; a contrast to Netflix that has run numerous promos with major ISPs.

The deal also marks another shift in the relationship between Sky and Disney+"

Tempting.

I might put a proposal to the Minister of Finance tonight to migrate from Spark. We're with Spark Unplan with Netflix (and pay for Disney), and I can see that if we get Sky Starter, and the Sky Broadband 100 with Disney+ and pay for Netflix, it will be the same price.

Just the whole migration thing to go through without being disconnected for a long period (ie., more than a couple of hours).

Pity their next-gen box isn't ready to go yet as the Disney+ offer would compliment it well
