Even so, its still best for troubleshooting purposes (the isp can see things in the chorus troubleshooting portal like power and lan port status) if the customer calling them can physically access the ONT.

So all you need to do is just get an opticat cable from the existing ONT or ETP and route it to the location you would like the new ONT installed. Then the chorus tech will come out, install the ONT and splice the cable at no charge.
If you dont have the skills to run the cable yourself, you can hire an electrician or low voltage tech to do it.

When I had internet issues the One NZ tech told me a couple times to restart both HFC modem and Router, so thought this was normal for an ONT as well. From the comments am guessing that won’t happen too often when we change from HFC to Fibre.

So it sounds as if the easiest option is to go with the main ONT's port 2 cabled to the downstairs attached to a second ONT for there. Then they can get whichever ISP suits them.

This brings up other questions. When the downstairs with a different ISP to mine have a fault, will this impact my ONT upstairs since their optical cable is coming from my ONT or would most issues be fixed via his ONT/router.

Will downstairs turning off his ONT affect my internet? I suspect that turning off my ONT upstairs will cause downstairs an issue and not the other way around. So many variables to get my head around.

Since I don’t have much faith in my older sparky's ability with tech for any cable reconfiguring, when the time comes maybe I can DM the knowledgeable @nztim again?

Apologies to OP and don’t mean to hijack his post but sounds like we may have similar situations and advice will benefit us both.

In the port 2 situation you are not running fibre, you are running copper, cat6, to a router WAN port downstairs.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

@spyware I’m confused. Doesn’t the second ONT require optical from my ONT to connect it? Then a patch cable from their ONT to their router?

You connect a copper (Ethernet) cable to port 2, directly to a router.

A second ONT will have its own fibre from the street.

@eva888 you can do one of two options

  1. Run an ethernet cable to your current ONT Port 2 to your downstairs flat
  2. place a second ONT order and have pre-prepare a path from your ETP to your preferred location of your second ONT with internal microduct

The advantage of option 2 is that there is no reliance on your upstairs ONT and is 100% independent. If you go for option 1 and you are not home, and your tenants have an issue and asked by their ISP to restart the ONT they won't be able to.

Thanks, my misunderstanding. I understood from raytaylor that they splice into my ONT and run it to the second ONT. Got it now, they have to come from the street fibre box if there’s a second ONT. That’s the option I prefer so am not having to worry about reliance on us and ever ruining the young man’s  gaming.

Am I correct thinking there’s nothing to stop me getting the second ONT set up so it’s ready for when HFC ends as it’s a Chorus job?

They can do but it wont affect if your ONT is on or off

To be technical about it PON networks have shared capacity via time and frequency division.

In practice you will notice zero difference between a 2nd ONT and livening a 2nd port.

Though its awesome you are accommodating your tenant like this.

  • If there is a fault, and tenants need to power cycle the ONT and there is no one home
  • Not all ISPs have the ability add a connect primary to the 2nd port (While chorus support it not all ISPs B2B systems do

FYI - I did a 2 x 500/500 speed One.NZ and 2Degrees on a single ONT, just had to to tell them the number on the ONT. Worked fine with a single fibre as expected.
