Dratsab: The population in and around Auckland (as well as many other parts of the country but not to the same extent) has been growing steadily for decades. Telecom have failed to upgrade infrastructure in a manner which could cope with increased demand - demand that should have been anticipated many years ago. They deserve a good beating.
It's just yet another in a long, historic list of failings which demonstrate how much they have their eyes off the ball.
IMHO.

all these albany houses are in brand new subdivisions. there was nothing stopping vodafone, telstraclear or anyone else from laying copper down while the subdivisions were being constructed. telecom has to cable everything - the rest get to cherry pick thier opportunities.
as for rolleston - same deal, other providers could have cabled up there too - i thought that telstraclear had put cable in, but i dont remember where they did put it.
there are probably other (non telecom/vodafone/woosh 3g) wireless broadband options too. if not, perhaps there is an opportunity to be had for someone...?

PaulBrislen: we did, and did it first.
97% coverage.
My point is, the TV journos are doing a story that would appear to be about how customers who can't get Telecom can't get Broadband..
this is not quite right.
xpd: Is this episode on the TV3 site yet ? If it is, can someone post the link ?
I cant find it when i visit the main video site, it goes all screwy on me.. tried from 2 diff browsers, 2 computers on 2 different ISPs..........
Ragnor: It's not that expensive.
Vodafone Mobile Broadband, $69.95 for 3GB, +$10 for extra 3GB (if I read the plan details right), then $10 per GB (0.10 cents per MB) overage.
It's in the same ball park as 5-10GB naked adsl plans (see Snap, Xnet, Maxnet).
If you don't actually need/use a landline you can save a bucket of money not paying line rental for POTS.

sbiddle: Having watched the story it was a real shame Campbell was obsessed in trying to stick it to Telecom rather than focus on the issue.
Anybody who has bothered to do basic research would know that Albany was getting a huge number of new cabinets going live in June 2010.
It's unfortunate for Rolleston that they're one of the last places in NZ to get new cabinets and don't get the new ISAM until June 2011. Obviously extra capacity has been added to the existing DSLAM.

I found the bit accusing Telecom of sorting the guys connection out based on the fact the media were involved distasteful.
If they had done any kind of proper research they would have known that ports are allocated on a first come, first served basis via Telecom Wholesale, and that if they had skipped a Telecom Retail Customer to the front of the line they would be in a major breach of their regulation.
