Whenever an argument is made based on the high cost of data, I can’t help but remind myself that Hong Kong has been enjoying unlimited data since 2009 and that includes mobile broadband. Last year they also introduced a 100mbps fibre and phone bundle at under $30 NZD per month. Granted the population of HK is close to twice that of NZ and GDP profiles of the two countries differ, but the cost of data clearly is not a major factor in the grand scheme of thing, at least not in my humble opinion. Edit: By the way, the previously mentioned plan includes a free Samsung Galaxy wifi tablet.

Yeah that really isn't comparing apples with apples.

Here is an old sea map showing submarine cables used for IP transit back in 2007. Note how many more cables there are between Asia and the rest of the world compared to us

Comparing NZ with HK, or any other country for that matter, is difficult, and I did acknlowdge that.

However, it is not difficult to see that NZ is at least 10 years behind HK in broadband, given the ultrafast broadband rollout aims to service 75% of NZ population by 2020.

Its not difficult, it is not even slightly relevant. If NZ moved all of its population to Auckland, and only provided broadband to Auckland, you would get 100% coverage. So it would be cost effective to outfit it in 100Mbit broadband. And if the majority of internet access was to NZ hosted websites and content, then you will have an apples to apples situation to consider. Naturally with a network that physically small and dense, and with your internet access being mainly to websites hosted very locally, speeds would be high, costs would be low.

If it was financially viable ISP's would be offering un-metered internet in NZ.

It's not and so far every attempt has been canned, refer to: Slingshot AYCE and Telecom Go Large and Big Time.

Of all the countries to pick for comparison to NZ, Hong Kong is probably one of the stupidest.

It is a tiny area, with incredibly, ridiculously, dense population so can take advantage of huge economies of scale that NZ can only dream of.

Not only that, but a vast amount of Asian content is created and hosted in (surprise surprise) Asia, so has to travel a relatively short distance, making it relatively cheap.

Compare that to NZ where the vast majority of content is created and hosted in the USA or Europe and so has to travel the tens of thousands of KMs accross the sea, via the single cable connecting us to the rest of the world.

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

That is your opinion. Closer to home, even Tasmania has ultrafast broadband.

That fact remains that we are at least one decade behind. That is a fact, not an opinion.

Is there a need to start name calling?

Even Tasmania is ahead of us in terms of broadband.

Only parts of Tasmania. And only because they were a key trial area for the NBN.

NZ has lots of greenfields GPON deployments to, something many people seem to forget. There are already plenty of people in NZ with FTTH, and up until a few months ago there would have been more FTTH customers in NZ than what there were in Tasmania.

I didn't call you stupid.  I called the comparison stupid.  It is a stupid comparison for reasons I (and others) have already mentioned.  If the comparison is offended about me calling it stupid then the comparison can complain to the mods

Tasmania is part of a Fibre trial.
Several places in NZ have Fibre as part of similar trials (and have done for quite some time).

ETA: yeah, what sbiddle said

Really you wanna pull that out? Tasmania has a population of 500k yet still receives the same level of federal funding as any other state despite it's population which has fallen recently to $3billion per year. It's widely accepted that Tas simply gets waaaay to much money from the Federal government.

It's really worse than comparing it to HK

edit:// Back of the napkin math, Tasmania's state funding is around $6000 per person, To compare: South Austrailla's $21billion in federal funding put's it at $1200 per person

Most problems are the result of previous solutions...

HK and Tasmania are merely two of many examples I can think of.

The fact is, NZ did not rank well in the 2009 Oxford survey; we were just below Romania.

Edit: Net Index also shows recent and revealing data.

they are probably the worst examples you could have given.

When your fact is that vauge, I'm surprised you could even get away with calling it an opinion.

One decade behind what, exactly? Bandwidth? Latency? Price? Density?

This is the stupidest "fact" I've read in ages.  (That's not my opinion, it's a fact!)

Audiophiles are such twits! They buy such pointless stuff: Gold plated cables, $2000 power cords. Idiots.

OOOHHHH HYPERFIBRE!
