Regs: for all those asking about intl speedtests, if you have adsl or adsl2+ and were only getting 3mbps speeds to LAX or other overseas sites, then fibre isnt going to make one bit of difference... you're just likely to have lower latency

Potentially it could. One of the major things that reduce international speed is latency on TCP windowing. Fibre will have less latency than DSL (especially for those who still have interleaving)

Thanks for those pictures was really interested!

Hence why i wanted to see the pictures might just get a little lower :P

Wish UFB was comming to my town.. just getting a new ISAM installed as we speak so hopefully in 2020+ might see a change!

Latency has a massive effect on throughput.

Letency does have a massive effect on TCP stream, If memory serves me right a single TCP stream on a link with no packet loss with latency of 100~ms was 3mbit.

Steam's just moved local to us so users are getting 50mbit downloads (One guy downloaded classic counter strike in under 3minutes) and that speed is not going to be effected by normal peak time use or latency related problems.

The next big issue for our users is their own internal gear. We've had issues with users not getting their 50mbit because of internal switch or computer problems

Most problems are the result of previous solutions...

No need to go too far: DonGould was complaining here on Geekzone on how TelstraClear DSL wasn't performing well for him... After days of talks it came out he was running a Linksys PAP2T as his main router - a little device well known for having a slow CPU and no able to handle high volume of connections well...

When I got the TelstraClear HFC connection here (100Mbps), they were worried about my gear. I am using a Cisco SRP 521W. This is a good high performance router. It just isn't cheap...

Smallnetbuilder has some great charts from their reviews, particularly WAN to LAN throughput is of interest. There are quite a few models that will handle faster internet connections well.

For me currently the Asus RT-N16 is the the new "Linksys WRT54GL" the spec's are very solid

480Mhz cpu
32MB flash
128MB ram

Can be flashed with DD-WRT or TomatoUSB too.

To be honest CPE gear has gotten crapper and crapper over time. Just looking at it and feeling it now you know how lightweight and rubbish it is. Gear for UFB needs to weight at a minimum 1kg to prove its good =p
