Agreed. It was not my intention to insult either.

Now, back to the topic g7 raised on the issue of polies...

Your point is made. I have to confess I've been working on stuff in a space and haven't taken any advantage of them at all.

Frankly after my experience in AU I really don't have much time for them.

I found in the past that they are only interested in point scoring against each other and not interested in the issues at all.

Do you feel other wise? would you like to see more lobying done by us in the community?

What issues would you like support on?

nzdn: I just wanted to say thanks to Juha for taking up the LLU cause on this site against the chorus of pro Telecom spin which is more representative of vested interest than general public opinion.

This is a job that absolutely MUST be done because geekzone is increasingly being referenced by google news and others.

Yes I hope that J's editor pays him well because he's the only reason I read the rage. I have been buying APC for years now and found little value in the PC World until I picked up J's article on the 20 top Internet people in NZ.

I read his article on LLU from cover to cover and have been following some of his comments on his blog.

Frankly I don't know that I agree with everything he has to say, however you're 100% right that he's bringing the issues to us.

J, if you're reading, and I'm sure you are, please remind me, next Wednesday, that I was meant to talk about PC World at this weeks LES meeting. I plan to encrouge the kids to be purchasing a copy of PC World each month or even better getting a subscription for a birthday or xmas.

Back on topic...

When are we going to see a draft of this regulation change? Frankly I think it's going to be to little to late at the current rate of knots...

Also what consideration has been made for ISPs wanting access within the loop? Will Telecom's NGN project give ISPs the same problems that AU isps are very concerned about in AU at present with the prospect of Telstra building a node network?

Is this legislation going to support community based efforts like I'm presently proposing here? Am I going to be able to rent a short run of copper to run a hop half way up a street on HDSL, say 800 meters? Am I going to have to house equipment in Telecoms exchange (with all the hassel that's going to involve)?

I quite accept that you may not like politicians but they have the potential to chance things. Get on their back, expect great things and eventually they will deliver. The worst thing we can do is ignore them. They can move the earth provided we explain to them why they need to do it!

I think you completely missed my point. I never said I didn't like them.

I said that from personal experience they seem to take what you give them and use it for nothing more that political point scoring in the media - this from my time in AU.

How much lobbying of polies am I going to have to do to get anything done.

I personally found it far more effective to lobby the telephone and internet companies directly.

Anyone with smarts will have realised that a big part of the reason I put this content up was to lobby some action.

I went to the trouble of publishing a blog this week on my other successes to give providers some amo to get things moving.

Currently I've got two types of users out there, those who can't get broadband at all and those who feel they're paying way to much!

Telecom's Paul Deavoll is reported to have said that it's unlikly that Telecom will find a business case to provide some 550 homes in Christchurch with broadband within the next 5 years.

Now a quick look at some of my earlier figures suggests that these people represent over a million dollars of business in those 5 years. Just how much of a business case do they need?

This week I took $1200 a year of Telecom revenue and turned it into dust by connecting up my second neighbour to my own local network. The students next door have been on the network for months so they won't be signing up for broadband anytime soon.

It's not going to take me to many more neighbours to justify purchasing a 5.8gb Trango unit and linking directly to our local ISP (200 meters away) and dumping the telco's completely.

However I would like to talk about this project if we're going to talk about polies for a minute...

"Of the total amount, $1.4 million (GST exclusive) is set aside in Year One under the “Probe Extension” fund specifically for rural or under-served communities. This portion of the Broadband Challenge builds on the successful work in the government’s earlier partnership investment in broadband through Project Probe. "

They managed to give out less than 6% of the funding in the first year! At this rate it will take more than 16 years to fund projects!

On the other hand I can't even put in an application for a small project at present because they're so tied up evaluating big projects that they don't have the resources to approve small things at present.

Good on yer for doing what you have done. It is exactly this kind of approach which can move mountains. I am in Chirstchurch myself for the next year after which time I will be moving to the country where only wireless is available.

Have you thought about running a campaign to get the 500 users in Christchurch connected to broadband? It should be easy to embarrass Telecom into action. A website, press releases to the local media, letters to the city council, letters to MP's, letters to Telecom's CEO and get the residents involved with a leaflet drop. You can count me in!

Most of us here have good IT skills - we need to use them to change things for everybodies benefit!

I suggest a nationwide simulcast/webcast/podcast concert to raise the awareness of this important issue. You should be able to get some sponsorship from ihug and Slingshot.

I can see it now....

No her work is done. They supported LLU just to screw over Telecom, surely you don't expect them to do something stupid like invest? Are you crazy? Shes busy hoarding her bread, we arent going to see any of it!

300 dewellings at present. It is Telecom who pointed out that there are 3500 dewellings that can't get bb at present. I'm thinking that we start small and set a target to get rid of that figure by then end of 2007.

With their CEO in the media at late, I think they're past embarrassment.

However this is about creating effective business cases more than just embarrassment.

Once I get those 550 homes off Telecom copper, and on to copper that they own, they won't be coming back to Telecom.

With 550 homes on a network I'll be able to talk to other providers about delivery '4 play' in to the network at prices that Telecom simply won't compete with this decade.

Done. As you can see, www.tcn.bowenvale.co.nz is growing. Yes, it's not very consumer friendly at present, but it's growing. Yes I do take your point thou, we do need a specific page to talk about the mission in a consumer friendly way.

First I have to collect a list of those media to do a press release to. Then I need to write one, but first I want to have some foundation in place.

Yes, thou a total waste of time. They're wound up in grand ideas of fibre rings at present. From what I can see all their time is taken up with big projects that may not even happen this decade.

- It will create more for J to write about (or other media).
- It will create something that other people want to come and see - tourism.
- It will create a great deal of follow on IT work in the local market - local business growth.
- It will open up a whole pile of opportunities - look at the small businesses that will instantly benefit.

There was a reason communism never worked as it was meant to...... Somebody always have to be in control, make decsions for the rest, committees always end up in fight and disagreements and nothing gets done
