I was syned up for 24 hours at 48mbit down and 10mbit up. Had no errors over that 24 hour period was assuming everything was sweet. Modem dropped DSL at 11am this morning and synced back up at 20mbit down and 400kbit (thats kbit not mbit) up. WTF! Just restarted it again now and its 38mbit down and 2mbit up.

Have spoken to Snap a few times over the last few days and just get the kind of ohh let DLM sort it self out responce. But this is more than DLM. I mean who syncs at 400kbit upstream on VDSL haha. I have sent them an email now and await a reply.

Ok, so my overnight results while on RFI 5 are: 0.5 CRCPM, so strangely higher than on RFI 3 (0.44)!?

I'm going to try RFI 4 now and see what the results are today.

WELL!! THAT was an interesting experience!!

I've been having fun playing with those RFI settings!!

Basically I tried every RFI level including 5 & 3 (which were working fine previously) but it was as if RFI wasn't taking effect (or possibly even making things worse)!? Even after router reboots & power cycles, I got nothing!! In the end what fixed it (maybe) was setting the RFI to 1, setting it back to 4 & then rebooting the router. Not sure if this was fluke or some process that actually works... time will tell!

So I'm on RFI 4 now and errors are at 0.16 after 15min!

I'll see how that goes today and then try RFI 2 tonight.

As a side note, during my playing around with the RFI settings, I resynced or rebooted probably 15+ times within a 3 hour period with (apparently) no ill effects on my sync rate or DLM profile. Again, I guess, time will tell. If I'm put on a worse DLM profile tomorrow morning we'll know for sure :D

Ouch that does sound "Fun" - It can be hard to tell what the actual effect of tweaks is without leaving it for a good few hours to average out.

Will be interested to see how it goes though. I guess that RFI might just be snake oil that happened to correspond with an improvement on my line for other reasons ;-) Or yeah, the Fritzbox is a bit buggy in how it actually applies changes.

Hi all,

I've been keeping an eye on this thread. Thanks for the plethora of great information.

I've been on VDSL for a week now. So far I'm sitting on DLM-2. I had to move my signal-to-noise ratio slider down one notch. I'll probably bump it back up in a week or so and see if it holds.

I sync 38592 down and 8048 up at the moment.

In any case - so far I'm happy.

On another note, I've found the Fritz firmware to be particularly lacking and buggy when it comes to DNS, DHCP and the configuration of.

In the past I've run tomato routers - which has allowed me to run an internal domain and do interesting things with DNS. For example, I have a domain that I use internally and externally. Without some simple config this is pretty much impossible with the fritz.

I've also noticed it has issues with static DHCP entries. Anyway - custom firmware to the rescue.

I've found Freetz. (http://freetz.org/).

Has anyone tried this? I've compiled a new firmware that replaces the internal fritz DNS with DNSMASQ. Once my DLM profile has settled I'll be giving this firmware a shot.

Anyway. Thought I'd fire that out there just incase anyone else wants more from their fritz. :D

The Freetz firmware sounds like an interesting idea. I personally run my fritz behind a firewall so only use it as a VDSL modem and nothing else, but I'm sure many fritz users would be very interested in modding their router! By the looks of the site people may have to start learning some German however! :D

In your travels on the freetz site, have you seen anything that improves / enhances the fritz' VDSL tuning / capabilities?

If you like, post your DSL Information & Spectrum tabs; we might be able to assist you to eek some more speed out of your connection yet! Your 8mbit upload seems a little low. Most lines should be able to do 10mbit without any issues.

Well, I've been on RFI 4 for 8 hours now, and CRCPM is sitting at 0.47 (Interestingly, pretty much dead center between what I was getting on RFI 5 (0.5) and RFI 3 (0.44). Next up, RFI 2 for overnight testing :D

To elaborate more on Freetz;

Yeah.. its mostly in German. But if you know your way around Linux, you can quite easily decipher and create a custom image. Most of the packages Freetz exposes are commonly used - and all have english man pages.

Here's a list of MOST packages you can install;

Note that freetz is smart. If you preselect DNSMASQ, It'll automatically disable the built in Fritz DNS and DHCP server. So a bunch of the integration work is already done - Freetz just makes it easier.

To answer your question Sam, yes - I believe I spotted some information about a) replacing the entire ADSL / PPP packages and b) DSL web interface with a freetz version. I can't find the page again though unfortunately.

Hmm, Freetz sounds interesting... any idea if it allows you to bridge with the Fritzbox? Would be quite interested if it did as I've been wanting to return to running a Gargoyle router (without double NAT) and I've already got DNS and DHCP handled by Ubuntu\Amahi. @SamF sounds like you're doing something like this? Are you just living with double NAT or have another way to do it?

Yep - dropped the SNRM. Only because I was impatient. Non remedial errors per minute were about 0.15 before I changed the SNRM. Now they're 0.05. I believe I probably didn't need to change this but Remedial Errors were in the 5000's prior.

I used to have amahi and dns handled by my Ubuntu box - but It also serves as my NAS and found it problematic having all of my base network services on that box. That's originally why I went to a tomato router in the past.

Anyway - Freetz allows you to run your Amahi and DNS / DHCP all from the same Freetz hardware. You'd definately be able to setup a full bridge using Freetz. http://freetz.org/wiki/packages/bridge-utils

I've since put it back to the left by one and error rate has gone back to reasonable levels. So RFI might be worth trying if anybody else has error rates that are a bit high.

I was planning to leave mine alone to see if it would downgrade me to DLM-2 again (as I'm seeing 0.5 CRC errors per minute or higher on DLM-1). But this looked interesting so I thought I'd give it a go.

So initially I had 0.52 CRC/min. This is actually a lot lower than when I went onto DLM-1 8 days earlier - at first I getting about 0.85 CRC/min. I think the drop may have been because DLM switched bitswap on for downloads at some point. Or perhaps DLM does some other tuning that isn't visible in the Frtiz's ui.

First I tried moving RFI down one notch. Errors went back to 0.84 CRC/min. So at best this had no effect.

Next I tried moving RFI back to the right and SNRM down a notch. 0.82 CRC/min. So again no benefit.

Then I tried resetting SNRM and moving RFI down 2 notches. This was worse if anything. About 0.95 CRC/min.

Finally I've put RFI to the right and moved SNRM down 2 notches. This is looking good: 0.14 CRC/min and 7 FEC/min. My line has always shown low SNRM on DLM-1, typically 10 or 11db. Now it's showing 12 or 13db. Sync rate is now 42300 vs 44700.

I'm not expecting a DLM change until late October, a month after my last change. My plan now is that if DLM does not make any changes I'll move SNRM back up in early September. If DLM does drop me back then I'll either leave it alone or back SNRM off one more notch.

Current stats:

The last change to the line settings was around 1am - the difference is pretty marked.
