SamF: Ok, so I'm a glutton for punishment, but my curiosity got the better of me and I tried changing RFI back to 1 on my connection. There was an immediate increase in FECs, but no measurable increase in CRCs. Swapping around different RFI levels made no measurable difference and I'm now back where I started with RFI at 5.

I decided to try changing RFI again on mine to see if it still makes a difference.

CRCPM error rate at 10am this morning was 0.05 (and it has been since last weekend) This is with RFI set at 2 (one left of max performance)

I put it back to RFI 1 at 10am (did the usual unplug line, change setting, soft restart, power cycle, check setting, plug line back in)   - errors went straight up to 0.9 CRCPM.  3 hours later at 13:00 they had settled on 0.8.   So an order of magnitude greater than they were.

So I put RFI back to 2 at 13:00 and now an hour later they're back at 0.06.   Seems quite consistent on my line but either my line is different or my fritzbox is behaving differently. Firmware is 99.05.22 FWIW.

I suspect what will happen is that it'd stay synced but as the other users come on your error rate will jump.

Might be worse if they were on vdsl.

1db SNR now, but still I am at 30 meg down which is 6 more than the best I have seen at normal times.

Hmm, this is ugly tho...

And worse again once the SNR hits 0

Is there any way to make the fritz do a resync without dropping PPP? Everytime it does it gets a new ipv6 prefix and then all my mapped drives stop working for a while.

Or will snap get static prefixes anytime soon?

I believe you can't have a PPP connection without sync. So, no. :)

Back to normal after I rebooted the router.

Bit disappointing in the design of DSL if it can leave the connection in a state with 0 SNR and basically unusable.

I didnt do a grab of trying to play a youtube while it was all dickky, but this is it buffering post re-sync.

If I had not rebooted to force a resync then I assume that DLM would have done something unpleasant at 4am or so?

@Sidefx: Well, I followed your suggestion re the setting change process (unplug line, change setting, soft restart, power cycle, check setting, plug line back in), but no change unfortunately :( I am also running the same firmware as you.

I'm beginning to wonder if the Chorus guys are right and there is something wrong with my router! The errors / lack of errors don't seem to have any rhyme or reason to them; it seems very intermittent! I might try getting a replacement router just to eliminate that possibility.

I often wondered if there was an issue with my modem, Snap tell me that they have only had a couple of faulty modems out of thousands. I guess yours could be another? Ask them if you can borrow a test unit.

Anyway, I installed a VDSL splitter the other day and resynced my modem. Have had a stable sync ever since. Currently breaking records with nearly 3 days uptime! Either the pairing in the ETM was faulty and repairing it with a splitter fixed it, or the line just needed a splitter. Either way it seems to have given me a perfect sync AND its stable (so far).

I am now wondering if I should ask Snap to reset my DLM since during the first 10 day period I had 57 resyncs due to all my issues. If my line is now stable I should be heading fast for DLM1 not DLM 4 that I am currently on.

Here is a run down of my stats:

Very interesting!  I'd say that there was some wiring issue vs the splitter making any difference.  AFAIAA the DSL side of the splitter is actually a straight through connection with no circuitry and in addition, you have a naked connection, so in any case there is no analog signal to filter!

I'd definitely do the line/DLM reset as well!

You're not on DLM-4, you're on DLM-3. I expect that DLM will put you on DLM-6 next (8ms, 2 INP), then DLM-2 (8 ms, 0 INP), then DLM-1 (1ms, 0 INP). If latency is important to you then ask Snap if they can get Chorus to reset DLM for you. If you're not doing a lot of gaming then don't bother - DLM will make the changes eventually anyway and you can't sync much higher in any case.

Yeah, but after the 10 day period DLM only normally changes once a week, if he gets DLM reset he'll be getting changes daily which will speed things up considerably.

I don't think DLM changes once a week - going through all the reported DLM changes in this thread no one has had weekly DLM changes. Monthly changes seem to be the norm when DLM is not in it's rapid change state making changes every 2 days.

However, what does it matter how long it takes if latency is not important to you? He's already syncing at 47mbps. If 50Mbps is the limit on 8b then it can only get 6% faster. So, as I said, if he's not gaming then why bother?
