should be configurable.

the main issue with ISP routers are VF ones which the customer doesnt get the modem removed from their account and then it can "auto-prevision" for the wrong user.

you should not have a problem using a Spark modem on bigpipe.

Telecom modems are the easiest to set up actually. Because there's very little settings you can change, there's very little that can go wrong. It should just work, if not, a factory reset will make it work.

People on trademe don't know wtf they are talking about for the most part.

Telecom modems (that aren't totally ancient) should be absolutely fine. Probably won't need any configuring at all. Maybe a factory reset, but probably not even that.

given the $20 grabone deal, i think pigpipe seems like a no brainer now :-)

the only choice now is, do i really need vdsl, we dont watch heaps of streaming and its always low definition.

Why would you limit yourself to low definition? Ick. Gross.

Get VDSL, the first time someone sends an email and your gaming doesnt turn to a mess you will know you made the right choice. 1 meg up on ADSL wasnt enough 15 years ago, and its even more the case that its not enough now.

because we simply dont care about pixels and we dont game online much.

its likely to be more of an issue downloading files too and from cloud services. im pretty much set on vdsl, will be moving back into fibre zone 2016.

Cloud spending continues to surge globally, but most organisations haven’t made the changes necessary to maximise the value and cost-efficiency benefits of their cloud investments. Download the whitepaper From Overspend to Advantage now.

Well sending data TO the cloud relies on your upload speed. VDSL is 10 x faster than ADSL in this regard typically so that would be a major consideration I'd think.

Dynamic. You will get that unless you specify otherwise.

So what is the benefit of public IP? Is it preferable not to be behind the CGNAT?

99% of home users wouldn't need one. I wouldn't worry about any of this.
