Well... Asking for volunteers? Surely someone, at some stage, mentioned that a self selected sample basically invalidates all the resulting data? Yeah, it was me - several times, in official capacities. Everyone with a good technical or stats background backed me up and yet... This.

1.

The new testing company is the only other testing company in the world with real-world experience at testing, ie they were the dominant player. They under cut TrueNet in price to get the business, driving their only competitor out of business

2.

The new tester is UK based and the data goes directly offshore. They are not subject to NZ privacy laws so they will not look at the data as it passes through? hehe

This is massively disingenuous John. You are suggesting that they will be looking at personal data. That's no more likely than you or your staff spying on volunteer usage when you ran Truenet. Despite the serious misgivings I had over your methodology, design and analysis, I _NEVER_ even considered for a moment that you or your staff were snooping on data.

It's understandable being bitter, but come on.

Also, glass houses, stones etc. I got an unsolicited email (spam) from you just a few days ago about a new business venture you're starting up to the email address I signed up to Truenet with. That's probably shadier than anything Samknows will ever do with the data.

So, 3000 people of all demographics, IT knowledge, and so on sign up. The fact is there will be a bias towards non IT people, people with poor internet due to rural, wifi, kids hogging it and so on. Its like taking a sample of rugby watchers and phrasing it to grab people that dont like rugby.

The test box is connected over ethernet, and will only test when the connection is not otherwise being used.

How exactly would it know if the connection "is being used", nope not a thing without direct access to a high end CPE which is not the case.

The test device goes between your router and the other devices on your network.

Not so sure on this and the website (https://measuringbroadbandnewzealand.com/howitworks) is a little vague on details. How would it know what a wireless device that's connected directly to your router is doing? In most homes, all devices connect to the router wirelessly. I see this as a major flaw in this type of testing.

"Wireless connection remains unchanged". This has the ability to majorly impact the performance measured due to contention between your wireless clients and the measuring device.

Edit - I see that it also connects to your wifi - therefore, this may not be as much as an issue. What impact would client isolation have on this?

Connecting to WiFi as well won't be foolproof. As people will replace their routers or change passwords, and forget to update the testing device.

And would it have full visibility to WiFi traffic on mesh networks?

My prediction is ISPs which have a user base of less technically inclined users. Will probably get hammered in the results. It's going to be interesting, comparing the first Samknows report with the last Truenet report.
