pdh:

Starlink is slightly off-topic (in 2020) - hopefully will be very relevant by 2021 or 22.

Global satellite-fed connectivity might avoid local bottlenecks - and might even include niceties like VPN and geo-location spoofing... so I can watch Canadian National Film Board films in NZ. (Just a nice, legal (and true) eg.)

I don't really understand the importance of latency for anything other than gaming.
How would Starlink likely stack up compared to Rural Broadband or VDSL ?

Relevance to 2020 is that a temporary solution may be an option while waiting ;-)

Current satellites don't have satellite to satellite links (expected end 2020) so would have to communicate to a base station in NZ.

My Rural ADSL gives down/up/latency/cap of 18Mbps/1Mbps/30ms/unlimited and RBI 4G ~20-40Mbps/~20-40Mbps/80ms/250GB. Starlink has hinted at ~1 Gbps/???/~10-40 ms/???. Each satellite is ~ 20 Gbps. We will have a relatively high satellite to population ratio though due to our latitude and being a small island in the middle of the ocean.

The South Island is at the right latitude (sorry North Islanders) to be one of the very few places in the southern hemisphere that will initially get coverage. See from about 4:15 at  https://www.reddit.com/r/Starlink/comments/bzcicq/new_starlink_early_deployment_animation/ Just need a base station and regulatory paperwork to be sorted!

Yes, but how much data do you get on a satellite connection? My (rural living) cousin had a satellite connection some years ago, he described the speed as "slow" and the data package as "miserable".

... found a useful tool that allows forcing the band to 700 Mhz and much better.

Hey Zenourn, I'd be very interested in this tool as I also have lots of trees between me and the tower.

Available at https://routeur4g.fr/discussions/discussion/67/lteinspecteur-logiciel-de-surveillance-des-routeurs-4g-huawei

Can select English when you run it. Worked well for me with my particular modem and firmware version but can't guarantee anything.

The difference it made in my case was huge, especially for upload (x10 up speed).

Thanks. I'll give it a try.
