The difference between sd and hd is massive. Its night and day. I hate it when people claim to see no difference... its huge!

I'm sorry to offend you but I just don't see it. I would really like to understand what I am missing here. I'm not saying there is no difference at all, just that for me and others I know it is not night and day.

+1 for night and day. I refuse to watch SD now, life is too short.

How close you sit is a factor. The further away, the less noticeable the difference. Sit far enough away, they become one and the same.

Doesn't bother me either.  I prefer HD, but I'm happy to watch SD.  I can't tell the difference between HD and UHD/4K/8K whatever.

Anyway, sky have the only current way for a lot of these people to get a workable TV service that suits them. This is a great chance to make it a bundle.

Now the next question is when will sky start to sell power and gas?

If Satellite is the only way for a lot of people to get a workable solution, I’d take it that their internet options won’t be to flash for Sky to bundle in with it.

Well perhaps once they have the fiber installed they can send out installers to put in their version of the vodafone TV box. What a lot of people on here dont understand is that installing things is too hard for many people. Even in the days of 3 colourcoded RCA plugs .... too hard might break it or electrocute myself... So having skills with sending out cheap techs to do messy cable runs in a lowest effort manner to connect up obsolete equipment may be benificial to them.

Remember that some people need written instructions on what "channel" to put the TV on to use it and will call up because the grandkids broke the sky when they plugged the nintendo x-station into the TV when they were staying.

Till then, the sat service is going to keep on going on with its non full HD interlaced content with a workable remote and guide that many people cant handle anything more complex than.

The SD satellite transmissions are all 576i. I don't know why people would think they are 720P. Freeview satellite streams are original DVB-S mpeg2 from 2007 - the original decoders support nothing more so they can't be changed. Terrestrial SD channels are also 576i. Most Sky SD streams have been changed to DVB-S2 H.264 which makes them look a bit better but they are still 576i. 720P isn't used at all on any transmission.

I've always thought the quality as it was on Sky's DVB-S mpeg2 was worse than analog. Absolutely vulgar, I even gave my decoder back in 2008 because of the poor quality.

No, when Sky changed everything except their Freeview channels to DVB-S2, they changed the old SD channels to a non-standard format: 1440x1080 interlaced as transmitted, but 1920x1080 displayed.  They are not 576i.  Some are better encoded, H.264 High@L4, and some are only Main@L4.  But they are all much better than SD, even if they do not quite qualify as fully HD.

richms: I'm talking about the absurd macroblockking because of the extremely low bitrates used.

Resolutions another issue but using a many decades old mpeg2 codec is half the reason since there are now 2 newer generations in widespread use. They will have to turn that off sometime which will result in the same whining as when analog was turned off.

It needs to go. It's not fit for any screen available now. Sky provide a better more suitable service over sat which despite still being interlaced (another retro throw back) is soooo much better to look at

MPEG2 has been gone ever since they completed the DVB-S2 upgrade.  They replaced all the set top boxes that could not do H.264 and DVB-S2 and when they had done that, changed everything to DVB-S2 H.264 except for the channels they transmit on 12519 for Freeview.  There was not much whining as the new STBs were actually better than the old ones.

They look poor compared to bluray disk. Its only a 30% improvement in picture quality at best

The old ceo claimed people dont see the difference between 1920 and 1440 resolution.

Well then in the meantime they will not be able to complete with likes Netflix (non sport).
Netflix does fine with having people set it up themselves.

SD channels on SKY are still SD resolution, don't get confused with the display output of the Sky decoder which can be set in the sky decoder menus.
