I agree, quickflix want be happy, especially only just starting up in new Zealand. Might not be that long before netflix and hulu block it as well, especially if the amount of people using it sky rockets. Still think it's a great service that they are offering, but for how long?

So I just got a reply from Fyx - they can only provision DSL to Chorus wholesale connections. So LLU and TCL Cable connections are right out, you'll have to go Naked DSL if you have any of those.

(To the Fyx guys on here, I'd say the FAQ response to "I have a phone bundled with my broadband from a different provider. Can I use FYX?" is a little inaccurate - might want to change it to reflect that it doesn't apply to LLU connections).

Sorry Noob alert! What is LLU and how would I know that if I jumped from TCL I wouldn't be on a LLU.

Perhaps if you're in an area that hasn't been cabinetised(sp?) then you are in a LLU situation (Local Loop Unbundling). Based on my distant memory of those situations (and I stand corrected if I am wrong) a rival ISP could put a DSLAM in the Exchange and connect the local copper to it and then use their own backhauls.

I am guessing wholesale customers of Chorus are those who take advantage of Chorus's fibre to the cabinet, purchase bandwidth from Chorus and use the existing copper (or possibly fibre in some areas) for the last mile to the home.

For TCL cable customers there is no option for naked DSL since they don't provide any DSL on their copper. They (and myself included) would have to get new copper to either the cabinet or to the Exchange or possibly use existing copper if the home used to be a Telecom provisioned place.

They can migrate you back from LLU to Chorus Wholesale if they wanted to.
Possibly there is a cost involved with this which they aren't willing ot bear though (they don't charge a connection fee as far as I can see)

Migrating back to Chorus from TCL Cable is still possible but again probably quoite expensive (probably more expensive if the house has no phone line at all)

Not quite - Fyx doesn't provide a landline, they only take the internet component of your connection (meaning you still have to have a landline with another provider to start with, or get a Naked connection for an extra $25). And since they don't have your landline, they can't migrate you back at all - your current provider would have to do that.

The way I read the article on Stuff the other day focusing on Netflix and Hulu, it sure sounds like trying to circumvent right holder's agreements with those companies.

34 cents per GB on the other hand caught my attention, however, by the time you add $25 for naked (since I'm a naked Snap customer) it costs more than my 5GB naked ADSL2+ connection I already have, with the $2 all I can eat Youtube video on top. So it's not really an amazing deal in my opinion. I can get 550GB for $70 making each GB 12.7 cents... if I wanted to seriously use it as my main means of video watching.

I wonder how long it would take Hulu and Netflix to realise what's going on, and just change tactics to make sure people can't circumvent their agreements with their rights holders or content providers.

Sorry but the way it was worded made Kim Dotcom seem more innocent to me.

I noticed the word 'could' was also in the first paragraph, so what exactly is someone getting other than 34 cents per GB that makes it tangible?

Agreed, It wont take long for Netflix to figure this out. So if Netflix block the IP ranges routing Netflix traffic what is Maxnet going to do there? Rince and repeat.

I wouldnt try this procuct my self unless Maxnet can grantee they have an agreement with Netflix that this is OK and they will not block/stop maxnet from doing this.

Hold me to what? I don't have any crontrol over what any ISP does.

I agree that I sux that NZer's don't have access to NetFlix and the likes however this is a dodgy way of getting around the restraints . Put yourself into Netflix's, SkyTV's shoes your going to be pissed that someones making ways to bypass your current restaraints to protect your investment your going to do something about it.

I honestly believe that in a way they (Netflix/Hulu) would not be too bothered..

They making money out of the extra (out of the country) subscribers. Its not a free service.

The reason they might be bothered is that they pay the rights holders for US rights, *not* NZ rights.

If the rights holders think they aren't taking reasonable precautions to not sell to non-US people, then their contracts with rights holders could be at risk.

Currently IP address checking is considered ?reasonable? by rights holders, but if lots of people do it, the rights holders might change their mind and require other checks, such as a US credit card or proof of US address
