Been out of the country for some years and heading back at the end of the month. Going to be living in Auckland and was set on getting the big pipe Elite plan, I just stumbled onto Stuff Fibre and wanted to hear your opinions on the differences between the two providers.

I'm currently swaying towards stuff-fibre because of the cheaper price point for the 1gbps plan.

stuff fibre are just resellers of someone elses product, they have no/very little inhouse tech staff so if there is an issue it may take longer than your average ISP to get communication going.

Stuff Fibre isn't the cheapest in the market; Bill Bennett actually did a blog post on price points for the majority of ISPs with gig plans (see here). If you're purely going off price point I'd recommend taking a look at that blog post.

However, if there's anything that the majority of 'what provider should I go with?' threads on GZ have taught me on here as a consumer (and not talking on behalf of Bigpipe for a second), it's that price point isn't everything. Think about what matters to you - whether it be speed/network stability, customer service, provided routers/good promotions, etc instead of just the dollar amount.

Do you already have fibre installed?
If not, your best option might be to get stuff fibre installed, then as soon as it's up and running switch to Bigpipe for their 'two months free' offer (only valid where fibre is already installed). That way youlll get a better ISP and save around $250.

But definitely don't consider stuff fibre as a viable ISP.

I'd rather be with a provider backed by an experienced telco with it's own separate network, new way of doing things and great people, rather than one owned by a viral-headline company which resells network access and probably wouldn't have as knowledgeable people.

In fact, I waited months on ADSL with an intact ONT to signup with Bigpipe once they were ready in Hamilton.

Out of interest why do you consider Big Pipe and Stuff Fibre as being two competing products? They're about as far apart in the market as is possible and both target completely different customer bases.

But the local access isn't the main source of congestion. It's the fact many ISPs only purchase 1gb handovers, have insufficient nationwide backhaul and lack of international capacity.
So not all ISPs are the same.

So not all ISPs are the same.

I never made statements suggesting that the ISP's are all the same, nor where the congestion at any given ISP is bottlenecked.

I think you should know me well enough by now to know I wouldn't suggest Stuff Fibre as being worthwhile. Having said that I remain unconvinced that email only support is right for a fair number of

end users either, so for your average non-technical person, neither of these ISP's would be my first choice, despite liking what BP are doing in the market.

Anyone who _knows_ these things won't tell you.

Anyone that tells you bad things about specific ISPs (in relation to the above points) is almost certainly not speaking based on actual factual knowledge unless they work for that particular ISP.

Considering how many services some have over their handovers, you'd think that $200 extra wholesale for the HOP (plus cost of capacity on their side) wouldn't be a big deal. You get 10x the capacity for only 3x the price of the HOP, I get that it is a low margin market, but cents per each service to improve or keep a good reputation is good value.

Both @Jase2985 and @NonprayingMantis (and others), do you have first hand experience with Stuff Fibre?

Using words such as "it may take longer than your average ISP to get communication going." without having any experience (and without having any user reported cases around here yet) is nothing but FUD. Stop spreading FUD.
