Hi all,

Does anyone know the best and cheapest places to buy computer components in NZ ? Is it a competitive market or are there only a few suppliers ?

I heard a lot of suppliers have tried to tap into the market and gone bust as there was no demand ?

www.pricespy.co.nz is your friend here. But most low prices are based on cash deposits rather than credit card ala Ebuyer....

I agree pricespy is a great place to buy. However just be careful as I have had the experience where the price advertised
on the web does not match the stock price in the shop. May pay to ring first to double check.

In most cases cheaper prices I have found. And if not, then you are gaining anyway as all delivery is free within NZ.

there is always a comprimise between price and quality, and this is no different. I agree with ZollyMonster, Ascent seem pretty good, however aren't the cheapest. They definitely have a good rep though.

Agree about delivery. Watch out, some places like QMB are cheap, but their freighting is expensive. Have found them OK to deal with though. Last time I was up in Auckland I went into their shop and bought stuff, sure gets rid of the shipping cost :)

i suppose u gotta know what u r after first, like the brand/model#/specs...etc

spend some time look at both PRICESPY and TRADEME. as 3C prices varies due to demand/supply.

from my experiece, if its too old or out of production, then there will be less listing (hence higher quoted price) from pricespy.

I'm having a bit of a problem with the "PC Online shop" (aka Rainbow Techology Ltd). I paid for some storage devices a couple of weeks ago (and payment was confirmed then) but my emails and phone messages enquiring about delivery have not been replied too. Has anybody else had difficulty or been ripped off by this company???

Have used Rainbow Techology Ltd once with good service, however I mainly use MadKiwi (http://madkiwihosting.co.nz/catalog/) as they have always been helpfull and have pretty good pricing and delivery (no I am not associated with them!)

Price Spy or Google are good for finding the prices. Just make sure in the google searc you're putting .co.nz or .nz for some of the local sites to be found.

If around Auckland, OEM computers, E-one, Supercheap Computers and other all do really discount pricing on things though often aren't on price spy.

Been having some nice times with c1 shopping mall lately too.

Best online retailers I've dealt with, when things go wrong (i.e. after-sales service):
* Auckland - Computer Lounge
* Wellington - Ascent

One of those two is the best in NZ IMHO, although Ascent seem to be slipping just a little lately (maybe they're getting too popular?).

I just got an email from PC Online this morning that the goods had been shipped. Took 16 days after receipt of payment for shipment - that just seems like a long time to be waiting for computer bits. I can understand they might not have everything in stock so save costs, but ignoring customer enquiries doesn't endear them to me. I'd hate to imagine the hassle in trying to return something (fingers crossed).

Maybe I'm just being fussy, but next time I'll stick to flashcards.co.nz (or try Ascent), even if they are a bit pricier.

If you are in christchurch then I definitely second his recommendation for TasTech. I probably buy about $15,000 of computer equipment through them for myself and my work every year, and his service is always exemplary, and whenever components need to be RMA'd they're really good, often getting in a replacement component before you return the original, for minimum downtime. In terms of speed they're also very good, frequently components can be picked up the same day as you ordered them, even when they're not in stock and are coming from the wholesaler, and things are almost always there by the next day at the latest.

If you're not in christchurch then, as others have said, pricespy is probably your best bet, and of course its always good to be able to take a look at the spectrum of pricing, so you have a good idea of the market price compared to the price at your favoured shop.
