So last night I found myself wanting to have a second monitor for a while.

I have a second monitor connected to my server, but it is too far away from my desktop and I couldn't get my hands on a extension cable at 9pm last night.

That got me curious, surely, I thought to myself, there is such a thing as an open source software monitoring driver that lets me run a second monitor on another PC.

And there is, monitors anywhere: http://www.monitorsanywhere.com/

But it only runs on Windows.

Anyone know of a viable alternative?

To put it another way, I want to install software on my Windows 8.1 64bit OS that creates a second screen and sends the output of that second screen to another computer (ubuntu) that can then display it on a monitor.

Anyone know of such a beast?

I expect the most commonly used solution would be VNC and similar remote solutions.

Yes, and synergy also works well, but not for what I am trying to do.

I want to run a game with multi-monitor support, I dont think vnc or synergy will allow me to do that.

Actually, I want to run Dwarf Therapist on the second monitor and Dwarf Fortress on the first. :)

In short - no, you will not get accelerated 3d in an acceptable fashion through a software solution.

What is stopping you using a cable? VGA/HDMI/etc?

At the time, availability of a place to purchase said cable at 9pm on a tuesday at night.

Now, nothing at all, and am going to do so, but I was curious to see if there was a software solution.

Are both computers connected to your LAN?
Activate Remote Desktop on your Windows box. Install rdesktop on your Ubuntu box.

Wrangling the rdesktop window to appear on your second monitor I leave up to you.
