Does anyone know of or use screen capture software?

I want to record my computer screen performing a set of tasks so i can use the movie in a presentation. It is just for a one off presentation so a free programme would be preferred.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

You are looking for Camtasia if you want it for Windows...

Thanks for the quick repsonse.

I have just downloaded windows media encoder from the microsoft website and it seems to do everything i need for free.

I will take a look at your recommendation as well.

You can close the thread if you like.

SnagIt and Camtasia are from the same company. SnagIt is for screenshots, Camtasia for screen movies.

For more complex presentations (i.e. actually installing stuff, demonstrating apps etc) you can use VMware workstation 6's new record/play feature which actually records the system events rather than a 'movie' of what's going on. Basically it guarantees your demo will go as planned and you can stop it at any time allowing users to 'take over'.

Developers out there will be interested to know you can also program client apps to start the recording themselves. As mentioned in the blog below this should be very handy for tracking race-condition bugs.
