This may sound like a stupid question but unfortunately I couldn't find anything on Google so I thought I'd try here.

Anyway, my question is, is it safe to place my USB external hard drive on top of my desktop computers hard drive unit.

Yes that is fine.

Ideally locate it away from the internal power supply of the computer for theoretical heat and electrical/magnetic interference reasons, just to be on the safe side.

In my experience USB drives (both flash drives and hard drives) are surprisingly unreliable, so ensure that any data on this drive is also backed up elsewhere.

You can place it on the computer as long as its not blocking any ventilation holes on the computer case.

I have mine sitting on the edge of the computer table.
