How weird, I hear you ask?

Well, my 10-month old daughter is now able to reach up to the desk and pull things down, and this week she discovered my mouse.  I wasn't too bothered - after all, how much damage can she do to the mouse?  It's pretty robust, and was still going strong after about 8 years of solid use.

Last night, though, I discovered that the wheel was sticking and sticky.  It looked like some gooey substance was coating the rubber track on the wheel.  I tried to clean it off, but it seemed to just rub the rubber off and it felt like it was making the wheel stick when I moved it.  I googled for a potential cleaning suggestion, and it sounded like others had problems with the rubber making the wheel stick, and suggested cutting the rubber off.  I did this, and it solved the sticking problem - the wheel now moves freely.

However, when I turned it back on and turned my computer on, weird stuff started happening.  The left click, for instance, would work if I clicked on the start button (running Windows 8.1), or if I clicked on an icon in the taksbar, but when that program opened, left clicking inside the window would make it lose focus.  In some parts of the window, a left click would work, in others it wouldn't.  For instance, in Chrome I could click to open a new tab, but I couldn't click and select the URL.  Other weird stuff - right-clicking a tab would close it; the wheel (middle button) wouldn't click or work, and it didn't scroll, though I suspected it might be related to the absence of the rubber track, so I put that to one side.  It was doing my head in, so I abandoned it for the night and went to bed.

I woke up this morning to have another crack at it.  Now, the left and right click doesn't work at all. I've tried it in a different computer, and it has the same problem.  But weirder still is that when I plug the USB receiver for the mouse into the computer, it interferes with the other input devices.  For instance, on my Surface Pro 3, once I plug in the mouse receiver, the trackpad and the touchscreen no longer work, even after I unplug the receiver - I have to hard-reset the Surface to get the trackpad/touchscreen to work again.

I haven't googled it yet, basically because I have no idea what to search on.  It's a weird and convoluted problem, so I'm hoping someone on GZ might have an idea.  Worst case scenario is I'd replace the mouse (and keep it out of reach of little children - though I doubt she is the cause of all of these problems), but I'd like to salvage this great little mouse if I can.

Any ideas?

Whatever goo got on the wheel probably made its way to the button switches and is sending the wrong click signal. If you can open it you might be able to clean it...

Liquid damage. Just get a new mouse.

Thanks, that's what I figured.  What I can't work out though is why the mouse is "infecting" the other computers I plug it into.  I've done this in the past and it's never affected them in that way.  It's kind of Matrix-esque the way the hardware problem seems to cross-over into the software world...  If I replace the mouse it's not really an issue, but I'd love to work out why other input devices pick up the same problems after I plug in the mouse receiver (and continue to misbehave even after I unplug it).

Because the mouse is probably transmitting even when it shouldn't.

I'd be reasonably certain that the goo is actually ectoplasm. Your removal of it from the mouse is akin to disturbing an ancient tribal burial ground and now your mouse is acting as a portal to the other side, hence your growing problem. I'd just grab what you can carry and leave quite frankly. I've watched ALL the Poltergeist movies and hanging around or trying to fight it is not likely to end well for you...

Yep, just burn the house down with the computer gear inside it, its not worth it now. Let the people who buy the land deal with it. wink

I would put money on Freitasm being right though, the goop has got somewhere it was not meant to and it is now transmitting a barrage of click events to whichever PC it is plugged into. Likely the switch under the mouse button is gooped down.
Kids and electronics are a fun combo. I came home to find my daughter feeding chips to the xbox by putting them into the USB flap on the front of the xbox one day. The xbox was clearly hungry as it ate a lot of them.

These are all good answers (especially JEDENZED - I tip my hat to you sir).  However, I can't understand how the PC can continue to receive mouse commands when the receiver is unplugged from it.  If it resolved itself when the USB receiver was unplugged then that would make sense.  However, the input devices remain locked even when the received is removed.  Unless it it sending so many commands that it filled the buffer to last several minutes (I chose to restart the PC after about 5 minutes of no response from the other input device - the keyboard continued to work), I can't see that the commands would continue to flow.  This makes me think the ectoplasm/poltergeist theory is more plausible.  I'll see if I can find a priest to exorcise my peripherals...

Okay, I just re-plugged the mouse into my Surface and the left and right buttons now work, and other input devices continue to work normally.  The scroll wheel scrolls, though the middle button click is gone (shame, as I use that all the time for closing browser tabs).  But otherwise, it's working fine.  Guess I don't need that priest after all!  I can only assume that time has worked its magic and dried out anything interfering with the contacts...

They may be dry now but will slowly start to corrode. Things will start feeling strange after a while. It's possessed now.

Yep, get rid. There is no telling what rugrat spit can do if it climbs up the cable.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking.  Dormant mischievous spirits are spirits nonetheless.  Time to shell out for the latest model (MX Master).  8 years isn't too bad I guess for the little rodent.  It's been a fantastic mouse, but it sounds like the MX Master fixes the few quirks the Revolution had.

Might pay to check the G700s out, no side scroll, but way better tracking that the Performance MX in my opinion anyway.

Received a MX Master last week for review. It's a seriously good mouse. The buit-in battery works so much better than using AA or rechargeable AA batteries, and working with both Unifying receiver or Bluetooth makes a big difference - Bluetooth FTW!

I have the G700 (with my keyboard) but the MX Master is so much better when it comes to battery life... I mean weeks vs days!
