Just bought to acer laptops.

 

Broken from out of the box.

 

i5 - cant connect to file shares - straight out of the box. Reason - issues with windows 10 such as cant connect to file shares owing to issues with latest windows update. MS says reinstall in place - did it - broken - acer says do factory reset - did - still broken.

 

Apps keep reinstalling themselves after uninstalling.

 

MS want me to pay to fix this.

 

Phoned acer - they want me to pay to get this fix.

 

 

 

i7 - screen issues - when a dialogue box opens on the screen then closes the screen doesnt redraw. Crashes when opening change display dialogue box (rundll32.exe not found)

 

Acer want me to pay to fix this.

 

no idea about the CGA

I take it that you bought two Acer computers?  Your message is not clear.

 

If there is a problem with them, TAKE THEM BACK TO THE SHOP YOU BOUGHT THEM FROM!!  You are covered by the Consumers Guarantee Act, and the shop you purchased them from is required to repair any defects.

sounds like software issues (not to defend acer), which as you've found acer will demand cash to fix

 

i'd try microsoft again. listen carefully to what they're asking when it sounds like they're after payment as you shouldn't need to pay.  eg if they say it *might* require paid support and ask if you are ok with that, respond that you'd rather try to avoid it, "but please continue".  note here that word "*might*" - they're not actually asking for payment.

 

if that fails with microsoft, make use of online support. they are actually quite helpful

 

 

 

as for acer, i've had a mixed bag of experiences, mostly bad. seen so many acer desktop machines all fail with bad capacitors in both the motherboard and psu. some in warranty with onsite service, others a month outside which acer actually make exceptions for, or they insist you dig up your receipt for it as they acknowledge the date they have on file could be different to your actual purchase date. Laptops sent overseas for one issue only to come back with another over a month later and too late for warranty.

 

it's happened where someone asks me my opinion on an acer device to which i tell them to stay away. next thing they're showing me that same acer device that they purchased anyway with problems.

We have found Acer chromebooks better than other brands. Your mileage may vary.

In your case I'd take them back.

We only sell Toshiba laptops to our clients, no major problems thus far.

I used to have to support Acer products in an enterprise that was cheap stupid .. special... enough to buy large amounts of them.

 

They are utter garbage, and Acer's support is worse again. Would never recommend them. 

 

Business grade HP's or Toshibas would be my pick, followed by Dell or Lenovo.

My first Acer laptop, the 17yo daughter uses daily, battered and bruised, no issues. The last one wife uses at home, never an issue. Aside from the odd vagary you get with Windows, that I also get with Mac now.

 

Sounds like a Windows 10 issue to me

I have mixed feelings about Acer. For reasons beyond my control, I seem to keep ending up with their desktops, a few years out of date. Generally they work well for awhile, but eventually they die. I can't really fault them for that, though I have an (original) HP from the year 0 that is still chugging along. Mainly, though, I bought a notebook from America, imported with some difficulty via my sister, and the touchpad on that is just awful. The computer is nice, I love it, so far everything else works fine, but the touchpad is an absolute piece of merde. It freezes without warning, just often enough to make my life miserable, but not often enough to be worth going to the trouble to fix. The only way to get past it is to reboot, losing any work that might happen to be in the way. There just is no excuse for this kind of rubbish. Apart from this, it is a great little computer and I just wish they hadn't ruined it with such a stupid, half-arsed, cheap piece of junk.

Acer use to be a brand to avoid at all costs due to poor build quality if nothing else.  I have seen/heard nothing that changes my view on that.  

 

OP...as already mentioned just take it back to the shop.  





Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

I've not had great experienced with a couple of Acer laptops. I wouldn't buy one. Lenovo, Dell, Toshiba, and Asus all seem fine - my work Toshiba ultrabook works great.

People need to stop thinking like this. The OP bought an Acer product from a retailer, of which the software was included as a component of that product. If the software is defective then Acer and/or the retailer own the problem. 

 

If you bought a car and the alternator died within a few days would you be happy for the car manufacturer to say "oh that component was made by Bosch so that's not our problem"?

bad analogy.  alternator is still hardware and in the automotive industry if there was a software fault it would be notified and recalled or if minor, patched without you even knowing the next time you got the car serviced.

 

 

 

there's been no elaboration on what those updates are or what the shares are hosted by. there have been security updates in the past that block access to certain shares.  classic example is the one that you could correct by changing the ntlm auth setting -- reducing security whereas you should be fixing the device hosting the shares.

 

sure, take it back to the retailer who might get it fixed for you. have that ticket number handy to tell them you contacted acer and want payment
