Have the following instructions

1 Connect USB cable to the phone and then to the USB port on your computer.
2 Touch the status bar on your phone and drag it down, then choose Connected as a media device and then tap Media device.
3 On your computer, open your phone's disk drive and choose files or folders you want to backup.

#2 is the problem, have no idea where/what 'status bar on your phone' is.

I've connected it to the PC (OS is Win 10) and received 'connected' prompt on the phone, but so far no indication inExplorer?

Slide your finger down from above the screen to bring down the Status bar.
Under there you will see connected USb media or something like that. Tap it and it will select what you want to do. Media, Charge, webcam or what ever.

Should work.

Is the 'status bar' a horizontal row of green icons at the top just under time and date ?

I can swipe it left and right.. but no 'Connected' or USB icon shows up.

There's a prompt under that (and under a banner showing 'ongoing') saying "Connected as a USB Device" touch for other options.

Touching shows it selected as media device. One other unselected option is camera. I exit that ok but just go round in circles afterwards.

I was expected to see something in Win10 Explorer but there's no sign of it.

If you download Samsung Keis 3 (free) to your PC and use that for backing up etc. That is what it was created to do.
