Having recently got an hdmi cable to hook my pc up to my tv I instantly noticed my montor looks terrible compared to my tv. For example bright deep rich reds on the tv screen appear as dull blue/grey looking washed out reds on the monitor.

Are monitors designed differently to make them better for reading text meaning tv will not show the more vivd rich colours a tv does? Or do I just need to mess with the settings / own a not so good monitor?

Connecting monitor with hdmi rather than dvi makes no difference.

If you google lcd display panel types, you'll see there is plenty of variation, with different strengths and weaknesses including speed, viewing angles, and colour reproduction. Go to any TV store where they are playing the same movie on multiple TVs at the same time, and you'll see plenty of variation in the pictures.

In my experience, AOC branded gear is at the lower end of the price range and this is normally reflected in the quality.

You can get a spider device that sticks to the screen and has a sensor with some software to calibrate the settings on the tv/monitor.

Televisions tend to amplify color for better entertainment purposes. They typically only serve entertainment purpose.

Computer monitors tend to have a better quality screen with more accurate color reproduction due to the larger number of applications they handle - text, movies, games, desktop publishing.

There may also be the issue of colourspace being used, and also the levels, Video normally uses 16-235 instead of 0-255 and the whole YUV vs RGB mess. This can lead to weak or oversaturated colours if the display and the computer are not talking the same.

You can usually tell if this is the case when you show some nice gradient test patterns - one or both ends of it will be a constant level instead of seeing the steps.

Have you tried adjusting your monitor to get a better result?

Google "monitor calibration" and have a play.

some monitors are just awefull , just the way things are. It can be a crap shoot with lower end models .
Unfortunately, you wont know untill its too late, unpacked & setup on the PC

It could also be that you are used to overly vivid cartoonish colors on the TV ?
Your PC monitor may have different display modes in the menu (eg movie, office etc etc) , thats the 1st setting to change to see if it helps

Problem is that reviewers will overlook glaring problems like a 400Hz PWM backlight dimming that is unusable at anything other than full brightness, orientation of input ports that prevent using the vesa mount on the wall, and broken HDMI support leading to no audio from many devices. Those have all lead to me returning monitors and in 1 case taking a hit on the restocking fee.

Yep been there , done that, bought a dud . :-)

Some time back I bought a Samsung monitor, based on glowing/fantastic reviews from magazines, websites , users & people I knew who had that model
Turns out, Samsung had used 3 different panels in the exact same model number, each subsequent panel being worse than previous
My purchase had the crappy 3rd panel : same model number , completely different quality to the original .
