I've searched everywhere for my external USB optical drive. Can. Not. Find. It.

Have resolved to buy another one to force it to turn up.

But here is my question....

Plenty of USB2 ones to be had, not so many USB3.

Should I persist in finding a USB3 one or does it not really matter for external optical drives?

many devices simply CANNOT use the super fast extra speed from USB3 , ie they cant spit data out fast enough to max even old USB2

so USB2 is OK , DVD/CD is usually so slow that USB3 will make no difference .
USB3 ports can (in theory) pump out more Amps for charging, powering devices etc

I took an external and made it usb. Used it twice I guess.

Never seen one. Might be useful with a bluray drive that is a few x speed, other than that no point on the really obsolete media.

I have got a slimline Blu-ray usb one I grabbed for 60 bucks off of trade me years ago to backup my movies when backing up movies was a thing. Its gathering dust somewhere now and I think I deleted all my movies and everything is just streamed now.

They are handy to have around ... I made one by pulling a drive out of a dead laptop, and slotting it into an enclosure (about $4 off eBay as I recall). Works a treat.

Thanks to @mspec I now have a pretty swish USB2 BR/DVD drive.

But it reads DVD's at barely 3.5x instead of 8x.

Is this as good as it gets with USB optical drives or is there something I need to change to get it going faster?
