Hi there,

I'm trying to find a cheap n cheerful PCI board that has both SATA and USB on board .. anyone have some pointers ?

I'm building up a home NAS based on an old Cobalt Qube2 but I want to have some options for adding storage, a limitation of the Qube2 is that it only has a single PCI slot.

The board would laos have to have Linux support as I'll be running Debian (mipsel).

I've found a superb sounding board :

KOUTECH SYSTEMS IO-PC820 FireWire 1394a+USB 2.0+SATA Combo PCI (FireWire, 2xExt+1xInt) (USB, 2xExt+1xInt) (SATA, 1xExt+1xInt)

But I've no clue where to go in NZ to get one.

Anything comparable would be looked at as well :-)

The closest I found was on ascent.co.nz they have Verbatim Kouwell, PCI, Adapter Card, 2x USB 2.0 Ports but don't list any sata+usb

It looks like they have become part of Verbatim and Verbatim don't seem to carry that item any more.

Other limitations of hubs notwithstanding, why not a USB hub attached to the presumably already-existing USB port(s), leaving the PCI slot spare for your IDE card?

I can understand why he would want a USB pci card, as they go at full usb2.0 speeds and the intergrated ones on the cheaper montherboards seem to choke. But all on one card sounds nice, A PCI USB+Firewire(a) and a PCI SATA-II raid controller might deliver better performance.

ahh .. "assumptions" .. terrible things those :-)

No USB on the Cobalt Qube2 ... it's an old box :-) Was initially touted as a Web Appliance, and a very nice one it was as well ... the old software is pretty much classed as tosh these days but the hardware is still sound albeit lower powered processing wise (250Mhz MIPs based processor) .. biggest draw is the VERY nice looking case .. a 20cm x20cm x20cm cube done in tasteful purple :-) .. and that you can install the latest Linux onto it.

Mine I'm turning into a home file server / media server using Mediatomb to serve video to the PS3 (or whatever) via uPNP and DNLA.

I need a PCI board to access the nice large 1TB+ SATA drives (as the Qube2 only has a single ATA33 IDE interface) ... I'd live with just SATA, but having USB as well would be nice .. opens the machine up to be a printer server etc. I'd not use the USB for dedicated storage as it would suck far to much CPU.
