The optical (CD/DVD) drive on my Dell 14Z seems to have given up the ghost. It's not always showing up in the list of drive n Windows Explorer and if it does I am unable to read anything on the drive.

I've followed the Dell troubleshooting without success.

I'm looking at replacing the drive. It is an HL GU60N.

Will pretty well any SATA drive with the eject button and emergency release pin hole in the same place work?

I'm counting on other drives having the same chassis layout and the face plates having the same mountings. Then I will be able to swap over the original face plate onto the replacement drive.

Thanks for your help.

I've had an Asus DRW-20B1LT which has worked flawlessly for years. Still got it now (in my new machine).

Aren't there two different thicknesses of these slim optical drives?

Why not just get a replacement of the same model?

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

Originally I had problems finding a new one and was looking at what my options were.

Why not an external USB DVD drive.

DVD drives are becoming obsolete anyway and some laptops & PC no longer have them
With an external, you could also use it with your next laptop.

Do you really even need one. Allmost everything is now downloadable.

I need to be able to read discs that have manuals on them.

I'd considered an external one, but don't want to have to carry around anything more than necessary.

Technofreak .... I have a spare slim-line DVD unit (9.5mm) that looks like a replacement for several laptop models.

You are welcome to try it ... I'm in Wellington.

Thank you for your kind offer.

I'm in Hamilton, so it may not be so easy to try it out. I'll keep it in mind though. Do you have a model number? How much would you want for it?
